Job Description

Dr. Heykoop is seeking a Research Program Coordinator to support a program of research focused on young adult cancer care in BC. The research program focuses on understanding the lived experiences of young adults with cancer and working with cancer care allies (healthcare professionals, decision-makers, and community organizations) to co-develop more integrated and responsive ways to improve young adult cancer care in BC. This role supports two projects funded by the MSFHR and the Vancouver Foundation that contribute to Heykoop's research program focused on young adult cancer care. It will support the establishment of and the execution of this program of research. This research program will use the principles of participatory action research (PAR) and patient-oriented research (POR) to meaningfully engage AYAs and cancer care allies (healthcare professionals, decision makers, researchers, and community organizations) to better understand AYA cancer care and explore how cancer care systems can respond to the unique, complex needs of AYAs with cancer. Led by a researcher with lived experience of cancer as an AYA and 15 years of experience conducting PAR, the work seeks to inform AYA cancer care research, policy, and practice in BC and beyond.

As a Research Program Coordinator you will assist Dr. Heykoop with this program of research focused on young adult cancer care in BC. Specific tasks include:

  • liaising with advisory group members and research participants
  • assisting with participant recruitment
  • co-drafting literature reviews and articles
  • assisting with knowledge mobilization materials (e.g. infographics, media, reports; websites, newsletters, blogs)
  • assisting with participatory action research process
  • planning/coordinating/facilitating meetings, events and webinars
  • research grant writing
  • other tasks as deemed relevant and appropriate by the applicant and Dr. Heykoop
  • The successful applicant is expected to work remotely and have experience being part of a virtual team, including collaborating and sharing virtually.

    The position requires journals searches, retrieval of relevant literature, organization of findings and writing related reports.

    Job Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree (post graduate degree preferred);
  • Understanding and experience with participatory action research (or similar processes);
  • Knowledge and understanding of the cancer care system in BC;
  • Experience working with young people affected by cancer or a chronic illness;
  • Well developed organizational abilities and administrative skills (e.g. Office 365, excel spreadsheets, data management, minute taking etc.);
  • Knowledge and experience of using online platforms (e.g. Zoom, Collaborate, Miro etc.);
  • Excellent inter-personal skills (e.g. online and face to face communication, email etiquette, team work etc.);
  • Experience with literature searches and data analysis;
  • Excellent writing skills (e.g. academic and professional);
  • Understanding of research ethics and ethical procedures;
  • Reliability and ability to work independently; and
  • Lived experience with cancer is an asset.
  • Additional Information

    This is a temporary, part-time position working 20 hours per week for a one- year term. The salary is $60,937.50 per annum (pro-rated to $32,500 for 0.53 FTE).
