In addition, this role is responsible for planning and directing certain phases in a research project. Required Education:

  • Appropriate Bachelor's or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience creating and documenting standard operating procedures for laboratory activities.

  • Ability to engage in independent literature study to acquire skills and knowledge needed to complete research projects.

  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory equipment and analytical instruments.

  • Working knowledge of standard office software applications.

  • Working knowledge of laboratory automation systems.

  • Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • A driver's license is required for travel to and from the Nuclear Science Center to perform regular work.
  • Other Requirements:

  • This is a physically demanding position that requires moving heavy cryogenic tanks, compressed-gas cylinders, and lead bricks (up to 50 lb). Prolonged periods of standing and frequent movements between laboratory rooms are often required during experiments.

  • Travel required to and from the Nuclear Science Center to perform regular work.

  • Preferred Education and Experience:

  • B.S. in chemistry with demonstrated coursework in nuclear chemistry or nuclear physics.

  • Two years or more of combined experience working in analytical chemistry laboratories.

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of quality management protocols.

  • Knowledge and use of databases and scientific software.

  • Knowledge and experience in working with hand- and power-tools.

  • Responsibilities:

    Performance of Elemental Analysis in Support of Customer Projects

  • Plan analyses and discuss measurement challenges in close consultation with Laboratory Manager.

  • Receive customer samples and schedule measurements in elemental analysis project queue.

  • Prepare experimental samples, calibrators, and QC materials for analysis.

  • Perform elemental analyses on customer samples, using the appropriate techniques and instruments.

  • Review analysis data and results.

  • Prepare analysis reports for approval by Laboratory Manager.

  • Dispose of used samples and/or package used samples for return shipment to customers.

  • Maintenance of Analytical Instrumentation

  • Monitor instrument performance data to identify potential problems.

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctioning instrumentation, as appropriate.

  • Keep detailed records of maintenance activities.

  • Notify Laboratory Manager regarding actual or potential instrument problems in a timely manner.

  • Assist Laboratory Manager with troubleshooting and repair of instrumentation.

  • Documenting Laboratory Procedures and Experimental Activities

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for routine laboratory work.

  • Develop and maintain manuals for custom laboratory instrumentation.

  • Keep detailed records of experimental procedures.

  • Support of Method Development Research Activities

  • Assist Laboratory Manager with design and execution of analytical method development experiments.

  • Contribute ideas for novel measurement strategies, in line with the focus of the laboratory.

  • Collaborate in the preparation of proposals, manuscripts, and oral presentations.

  • Support of Administrative Activities

  • Maintain organized financial records related to customer projects using database software.

  • Prepare and submit documents for project-based invoicing.

  • Controlling Inventories of Laboratory Supplies

  • Monitor stocks of various laboratory consumables.

  • Order supplies and research and identify substitutes or alternatives as needed.

  • Communicate anticipated shortages to Laboratory Manager in a timely manner.

  • Prepare chemical solutions and solid mixtures for use in analytical procedures.

  • Work with Laboratory Manager to maintain up-to-date asset inventory.

  • Practicing and Promoting Laboratory Safety and Good Housekeeping

  • Maintain clean and organized workspaces.

  • Identify and implement safety best-practices for all hazardous work.

  • Educate and encourage co-workers and students regarding safety expectations and requirements.

  • Develop and document lab-specific safety practices for new or modified research activities.

  • Dispose chemical waste by appropriate means in a timely manner.

  • Consult with Laboratory Manager and EHS personnel regarding safety concerns.

  • Observe, maintain, and monitor the lab-specific radiological safety program.

  • Keep up to date on all required chemical and radiological safety training modules.

  • Cooperate and assist with safety inspections and audits.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
