The Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering Unit (ATME) at Tampere University invites applications for several (at least 6) summer trainee positions in the fields of Innovative Hydraulics and Automation, Process Control, FAST-Lab, Dependable Systems Automation CyberLab, and Mechatronics.

Job description

The research assistants / summer trainees will assist the research groups at ATME by performing a broad variety of tasks. The research interests of our groups cover a wide range of fields, including robotics, automation, modularisation, integration and automation programming, and numerical algorithms. ATME seeks to maintain a balance between basic and industrially applicable research and has been recognised for research excellence in both areas.

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3 months, commencing on 1 June 2023 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of 1 month will apply.

1) FAST-Lab

As summer trainee, you will take part in reorganising FAST-Lab's research and teaching laboratory and creating the related safety policies. Your tasks will involve robotics, automation, integration and programming. In the field of robotics, you will also perform tasks relating to collaboration between a mobile robot and an industrial robot (safety, communication and mechanics).

2) Innovative Hydraulics and Automation (IHA)

Summer trainee in IHA Zonal hydraulics group will Improve her/his simulation and practical skills! A trainee will work on the further development of electro-hydraulic hydraulics concept and AI-based condition monitoring for the electric and hybrid off-road mobile machinery, assist with following:

  • Excavator digital twin (Matlab&Simulink, Amesim, Mevea, Labview),
  • Hardware in the loop (HIL) battery power management simulator for hybrid vehicles (Matlab&Simulink, Twincat, Beckhoff),
  • Transparent cylinder (Matlab&Simulink, Dspace) , and
  • Durability test rig (Matlab&Simulink, Labview, Bosch Rexroth).
  • 3) Intelligent Networked Systems (IINES) group

    IINES group is currently developing a Networked Robotics Laboratory (https: // research.tuni.fi/iines/nebolab/) for research and teaching purposes. The lab consists of multiple nano-quadcopters and ground mobile robots which allows evaluation/demonstration of different scenarios related to smart-mobility and distributed robotic networks.

    The summer job is a hands-on experience in one of the following projects (Please specify in your application which project you are interested in working on):

    Project A: development of remotely-accessible experiment setup for a robotic swarm. You will also have the opportunity to learn and test real- time algorithms for controlling the mobile robots (Turtlebots) and nano quadcopters (Crazyflies).

    Main tasks of project A:

    1. designing and developing web interface for user to log in and submit their code

    2. designing and developing automation to execute user's code into experiment and returning the experiment result (plots, videos, etc.)

    3. Integration with existing experiment system (ROS, turtlebots, crazyflies)

    4. Testing the system using various autonomous control and safety control algorithm.

    Project B: development of control interface for an existing commercial drone (Parrot Anafi). You will also have the opportunity to learn and test real- time algorithms for controlling the drone.

    Main tasks of project B:

    1. Investigation and testing of existing Parrot's SDK and simulator

    2. designing and developing interface to access the drone's states and camera

    3. developing and testing an interface to send control command from ROS to Parrot API

    4. Integration with existing experiment system (ROS and localization with VICON)

    5. (optional) Testing of various autonomous control and safety control algorithm.

    4) Dependable Systems Automation CyberLab

    Multiple topics suitable for summer trainee in extending Tampere Cyber City e.g. integrating steam engine as PLC controlled power supply for the Cyber City street lights, integrating traffic lights and wirelessly controlled for Lego train as traffic management solution, building a AR model (Digital Twin) of the Cyber City and integrating real-time measurements to the model, converting existing VR model of distillation process into AR model and integrating real-time measurements to the model, integrating ValmetDNA into distillation process AR model and many more. Depending on the subject the report language requirement may be Finnish since the outcomes are used in Critical Infrastructure Cyber Security Training in Finland. Required interest areas should be some subset of the following:

  • AR/VR technologies
  • Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Data integration and visualisation
  • Electronics, also some knowledge on using a soldering iron
  • Programming using some language (Visual Studio, Python)
  • Familiarity with Windows or Linux
  • Familiarity with Legos
  • Willingness to read manuals, Googling information, learning new things and solving hands-on problems.
  • 5) Manufacturing systems research group (MASYRE)

    Topic: Data collection, modelling and experimentation with the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process

    Multiple topics are available for trainees. They can be divided into two branches. A first branch of topics dedicated to the development of the WAAM process by integration on the platform of new sensors and development of design of experiments to print parts and collect data generated by the sensors.

    the second category of topics is trying to exploit the use of the data as well as the metadata to generate control models improving the stability and quality of the printing process.

    The manufacturing platform has a dual use and can also be employed for welding purpose.

    Interest areas for the trainees: The trainees interest areas can be varied but should integrate at least one of the following topics, manufacturing, additive manufacturing, process development, applied mathematics, Artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics, engineering design.

    6) Digital Design and Manufacturing(D2M)

    Topic: Research on optimization of digital design to manufacturing workflows

    There are three possible research areas (RA) for the summer trainee in Digital Design and Manufacturing (D2M) laboratory. We do not expect that you are an expert in all these research areas, but your study record and personal interest need to relate to at least one RA, and you need to show interest in exploring other RAs. During the application, the summer trainee will need to specify his/her preferred research RA:

    RA#1: Product design using numerical simulation and computational mechanics (e.g., Multiscale modelling, FEA, CFD, CAD, CAE, generative design, design automation, topology optimization…). Develop finite element (FE) modeling tools for physics-based forward simulation of products and applications to derive data-driven surrogate models using classical surface response method (RSM) and/or machine learning (ML) models and invert the design space from performance to process and material.

    RA#2: Material and manufacturing process optimization, Design of Experiments (DOE), Statistical process control, and process modeling for advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, hybrid machines, and processes. Develop manufacturing process data-driven models using DOEs and surrogate models, multidisciplinary design optimization, and ML/AI predictive models for material characterization and process interactions.

    RA#3: Sustainable Manufacturing, LCA, and digital manufacturing (e.g., Green digital twins in design and manufacturing processes). Develop integrated forecasting tools to assess the impact of engineering choices in performance, time, cost, energy consumption, and footprint of integrated material-process-design workflows.

    7) Tuotekehitys (Konetekniikka)

    Kesäopetus ja opintojaksojen verkkoympäristön kehittäminen.

    Työ sisältää kolme eri osa-aluetta:

  • kurssin Mallinnus ja dokumentointi KONE.110 harjoitusten pitämistä ja harjoitustöiden tarkastamista.
  • kurssin KONE.110 Moodle-sivun kehitystä (eteneminen, tenttivaihtoehdot, jne.)
  • Kurssin Luova ongelmanratkaisu ENS.510 Klubi-alustan ja Moodle-sivun kehitystä.
  • Tavoitteena on luoda kesän aikana päivitetyt versiot kurssien oppimisalustoista, joten molemmat kurssit tulee olla suoritettuna ja KONE.110 hyvällä arvosanalla.

    8) Cognitive Robotics

    As summer worker you will be working on different topics from research projects, related to robotics, human-robot collaboration and visual perception: https: // research.tuni.fi/cogrob. Your tasks will be evaluation of different tools, developing automated scripts for evaluation and reporting. This will give you hands-on experience in robotics, by programming with ROS and C++/Python.

    Requirements:

    We are looking for science and engineering students who enjoy problem-solving, have the ability to think independently and work in an international research environment, and possess good social and team working skills. Potential candidates include, for example, students in their 1st to 4th year who have successfully completed their studies, for example, in automation or mechanical engineering. A good command of both spoken and written English will be considered an advantage.

    Salary:

    The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of research assistant is placed on the job demand level 1. In addition, employees will receive performance-based salary, which in the case of research assistants is based on the number of credits they have earned towards their degree. A typical starting salary for Research assistant is approximately 2150 euros / month.

    Automaatio- ja konetekniikan yksikkö palkkaa ainakin 4–6 tutkimusapulaista / kesäharjoittelijaa. Tehtävät liittyvät tutkimusryhmissä tehtävään tutkimukseen. Tutkimusryhmiä ovat mm. FAST-lab, Innovatiivinen hydrauliikka ja automaatio, Modulointi, Mekatroniikan tutkimusryhmä ja Prosessien säädön ryhmä. Tutkimusryhmissä kesäharjoittelijat työskentelevät mm. robotiikan, automaation, järjestelmäintegroinnin, ohjelmoinnin ja numeeristen algoritmien parissa.
