Description of Work
The Research Assistant Professor is responsible for conducting research
projects related to laser macro/micro/nano material processing technologies
and the development of related systems/equipment in the Laser Assisted Nano
Engineering Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, https: // lane.unl.edu/.
Responsibilities of this position include:
Research and develop novel laser macro/micro/nano material processing
technologies that can solve practical issues in industrial and research
Conceive feasible solutions and prepare proposals for industry and
Design and develop product-grade laser material processing equipment that
can work in commercial and/or government applications.
Explore future research fields and direct the development of LANE group.
Educate and train graduate students.
Install, integrate and maintain lab equipment and systems.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Doctoral degree in electronic engineering, physical electronics or closely
Minimum of two years post Ph.D. research experience.
Project experience in laser desensitization for 5xxx Al alloys, laser
micro/nano processing technologies and related system/equipment
Research experience should encompass:
Research in optical system design, such as laser beam re-shape lenses, aspherical lens arrays, laser processing heads and high-speed laser beam scanning systems.
Experience in machine design for the development of industrial laser processing equipment, mathematical modeling to analyze laser-mater interactions, finite element analyses (especially for thermal-stress analyses).
Experience working with Nd:YAG lasers, diode-pumped solid state lasers, ultrafast lasers, fiber lasers (CW, QCW and pulsed), UV lasers, and CO2 lasers.
Multidisciplinary expertise and background.
Extensive research experience in optics, photonics, electronics, laser
materials processing, machine design, hardware & software development, and
system design & integration.
Demonstrated innovation and the ability to develop feasible solutions for
the problems in industry and the government.
Familiarity with laser cutting/ablation/3D-drilling, laser welding and
A strong track record of journal publication in laser material processing.
A strong track record of patent applications.
Proficiency using ZEMAX software.
Proficiency in using Solidworks software for independent design of laser
Experience in software development to control laser material processing
Familiarity with the circuit design of control laser material processing
Experience in finite element analyses (such as ANSYS) for the thermal
Experience in mathematical modeling (such as MATLAB) to analyze laser-
