Posting Details Job Title Research Assistant Professor

Department Continuing Studies Pay Grade 1 Job Category Faculty Job Summary

The Ballad Health ETSU Strong BRAIN Institute (SBI) seeks a junior-level researcher interested in conducting innovative multidisciplinary research on the prevention and mitigation of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), broadly defined. The Research Assistant Professor is a nontenure-track and nonconvertible faculty position. The initial appointment of this position is for one year and is expected to be renewable for at least three more years, depending on the availability of continued funding.

The SBI is the innovation of the ETSU “BRAIN Trust,” a talented and dedicated group of researchers comprising more than a dozen interdisciplinary faculty across a large number of ETSU colleges and departments. The SBI, currently in its second year of existence, is made possible by a generous five-year gift from Ballad Health Systems. The goals of the SBI are to

  • promote the awareness and empirical study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs);
  • promote the development and dissemination of evidence-based practices that prevent, reduce, or mitigate the negative effects of ACEs on health and health disparities; and
  • promote a trauma-informed citizenry and workforce in the Appalachian Highlands region and beyond.
  • The Research Assistant Professor will report to the Director of the SBI and manage a physical SBI presence on the ETSU main campus. The SBI is administratively housed in the ETSU School of Graduate Studies and physically housed in the ETSU Department of Psychology. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and develop ACES-related research initiatives developed by members of the SBI in the context of their multiple interdisciplinary collaborations, and to seek extramural funding initiatives on behalf of the SBI. There will also be opportunities for the candidate to serve as Principal Investigator, in collaboration with other SBI members, on projects and grant submissions that are of mutual benefit to the candidate and the SBI.

    We're looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, self-starting team player to fit our highly productive, but widely dispersed group. Our common interest is a commitment to the goals of the SBI, so we are looking for someone who will coordinate us as we pursue our multiply varied endeavors.

    ETSU is surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains, and is located in Johnson City, Tennessee, which contributes to a metropolitan statistical area of 200,000 residents. The area enjoys a mild climate in both summer and winter, and boasts numerous waterways, parks, trails, and resorts for year-round recreational activities. The area has been ranked as a desirable place to live by several national publications. In 2016, Johnson City was ranked by Kiplinger magazine as one of the “10 Least-Expensive Cities for Living in the USA,” and among the top five retirement destinations in the country.

    ETSU is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce by ensuring all of our students, faculty, and staff work in an environment of openness and acceptance. Successful candidates should have a demonstrated commitment and contribution to fostering and advancing equity, diversity and inclusion. East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
