Position Title Research Assistant Professor of Social Sciences Statistics

Position Number 329008 Department ECC Research Centers Job Description

To supervise, under the guidance of the ECC director, the research staff of the Center; to lead the research staff and to assist in planning statistical research programs; To design sampling frames in the conduct of scientific sample surveys; To compute ratio point estimates and complex variances from probability sample surveys; To develop questionnaires and survey instruments as appropriate constructs and establish reliability and validity estimates of the constructs' items; To develop and maintain address lists of housing units in the Virgin Islands from which scientific household samples may be drawn; To prepare computer applications for the capture of data from questionnaires; To provide work assignments and the general management of the (temporary) data entry staff; To apply high level computer software such as SAS, SPSS, Stata in the analysis of statistical data; To meet with clients to determine their applied research needs; To assist in the preparation of applied research grant proposals, budgets, and associated Internal Review Board documents; To prepare reports of findings that derive from descriptive or inferential statistical analyses; To make presentation of findings from sponsored research; To assist the director in various related statistical issues that may arise from time to time. To learn the procedures and processes related to the Virgin Islands decennial census programs.

Required Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Social Sciences, Ph. D in Social Sciences is preferred. Master's degree in Statistics or Mathematics with a minimum of 12 credits in statistics/quantitative methods. Three years of experience in survey work or in statistical data analysis.

Knowledge of: Scientific survey sampling; the use of SAS, SPSS or scientific programming language; advanced inferential statistical procedures. Essential skills: Thorough knowledge and experience in sampling, weighting methods of data acquisition and analysis in the Social Sciences. Excellent communications, organizational, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving and customer services skills. Abilities to: Analyze complex statistical data, write high-level computer language programs, construct scientific sampling designs, construct questionnaires and survey instruments, write technical reports, make oral presentation of findings to clients.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Social Sciences preferred
