About the College/Unit/Department

In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community. Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia. In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

FLSA Non-Exempt Job Family FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Valid Driver's License

Individual must have a pesticide applicator's license or have the ability to obtain one within six months of employment

Position Summary

This position will assist with the field trials for the control of peanut and blueberries' diseases. The incumbent will have the primary responsibility of managing both peanut and blueberries plots at multiple locations in the state, both with growers and on experiment stations farms. Duties will include land preparation, planting, irrigating, spraying, data collection, harvesting, etc. Accurate record-keeping. The incumbent will work independently and be familiar with the equipment and practices used in production agriculture.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

1. Competent in working with spreadsheets and word processing programs as well as able to learn new computer applications.

2. Able to effectively operate a tractor, set up planters, and calibrate sprayers and granular applicators.

3. Able to operate trucks and pull trailers.

4. Able to independently do all math needed for completion of field trials.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Conduct research in the lab, greenhouse and field plots; from planting to harvest, including implementations of numerous experimental protocols, as well as assisting with preparations of final reports.

Percentage of time 60 Duties/Responsibilities

Collection and compilation of data and reports associated with trials.

Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities

Application of pesticides (fungicides, fumigants, insecticides) using tractor mounted or a back-pack sprayer.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

Maintain vehicles and equipment used in field plots. Other duties as assigned.
