We are looking for a research assistant helping a research project on degrowth and circular economy in cities. The assistant will support the research team in setting up the public image and first research steps of the project DECYCLE, funded by the ERC starting grant scheme. The project investigates the regulatory frameworks that allow or hinder the circular reuse of waste in the built environment. It focuses on three waste streams (construction, food, heat) in five city-regions of Europe (Amsterdam, Milan, Hamburg, Barcelona, Vienna). The assistant will work together with a team made of the PI, Dr. Federico Savini, two PhD researchers and one post-doc researcher. The project is starting in December 2022, and the assistant will help setting up the research and its dissemination, both online and offline.

If you are a versatile person, with a passion for degrowth, experience in organizing research/dissemination activities, and written communication skills, then you are our ideal candidate.

What are you going to do

The research assistant will help the PI in setting the stepstones of the DECYCLE project. The assistant will help with two different sets of tasks:

Management and dissemination tasks:

  • Assisting the PI in communicating with the web-designer that will set up the webpage.
  • Collecting the material for the webpage and preparing its content together with the PI.
  • Setting up and maintaining a social media account with regular posts.
  • Helping the PI in managerial tasks, such as booking rooms, setting up equipment and keeping communication with invited colleagues.
  • Research tasks:

  • Helping with collecting secondary data on construction/food/heat waste in European city-regions
  • Assisting the PI in finding/making infographics about waste in cities (for dissemination purposes)
  • Transcribing interviews carried out by the research team
  • What do you have to offer

    Overall, the research assistant should be a flexible person with basic experience in scholarly research and good communication skills . Some experience in setting up and managing a website and professional social media accounts is highly recommended.

    Required skills:

  • Basic academic research skills in a topic related to the environmental profile of cities.
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Experience in managing and organizing research dissemination activities (eg. workshops, seminars)
  • Basic experience in managing a webpage (eg. wix or similar).
  • Interest in research on degrowth and, more general, on the environmental issues of urbanization
  • Good knowledge of the English language, basic knowledge of Dutch
  • Desirable skills

  • Knowledge of German, Italian and/or Spanish.

    The position concerns temporary employment of 1 day a week, 7.6 hours for a maximum term of one year. For this position the University Job Classification profile Research Assistant 3 applies.

    Your salary will be €2402 - €2611 gross per month, based on full-time employment (38 hours per week) and in keeping with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.

    Working as assistant in the DECYCLE project, you will have the chance to learn how to set up complex and international research. As research assistant you will be invited to join the dissemination activities of the project. The PI will help you in getting to know the University of Amsterdam and the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies.
