Description

Research Assistant in Optimised Walking School Bus Planning

Are you interested in conducting cutting-edge research in a highly topical area on Walking to School? Do you have a background in transport modelling? Are you passionate about integrating transport modelling and optimisation to help promote Walking to School?

OptiWaSP is an interdisciplinary research project between the University of Leeds, Lancaster University and the University of the West of England to develop methods and tools to increase the number of students walking to school. It brings together the disciplines of operational research, transportation modelling/engineering and social science, with the aim to create a set of methods to optimally design walking school bus routes. It will focus not only on walking distance but also the health and safety of students within a tailored walking network, and will be sensitive to stakeholder preferences. It is funded by EPSRC and collaborates with schools in Bradford.

Walking to school is a sustainable mode of transport that has many benefits for students, the environment and the community. Nevertheless, the UK government is failing to increase the proportion of students who actually walk to school. To reverse this trend, the EPSRC funded project “Optimised Walking School Bus Planning (OPtiWaSP)” develops tools to plan a walking school bus system.

We seek to recruit one qualified researcher to join our multi-disciplinary team. The candidate should have a Masters and/or a PhD degree related to transport planning and engineering or relevant disciplines such as operational research, computer science, mathematics and statistics. Candidates familiar with the application of network modelling in transport planning are encouraged to apply. This is a great opportunity to build a leading interdisciplinary research profile and develop experience in a cutting-edge and highly topical area that is critical to both science and policy.
