About - Department of Anatomy and Physiology The Department of Anatomy and Physiology's key research themes are neuroscience, metabolism and diabetes, muscle and cell biology. The goal of the combined department is to remain at the forefront of scientific research aimed at understanding the structure and function of the human body in health and disease, employing novel and imaginative research methods.

Our synergies in teaching extending beyond award programs to custom education programs focused on health professionals and industry. The former Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience had already initiated the Melbourne Academy of Surgical Anatomy in 2020, which has potential to be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, underpinned by one of the largest donor programs in the country established to support the teaching and study of anatomy.

Our Department also hosts the Australian Phenomics Network Histopathology and Organ Pathology Service, providing detailed histological phenotyping and digital scanning of data from mutant mice. Our researchers are in the Triradiate Medical Building and the Melbourne Brain Centre, and has excellent research facilities, including confocal and live cell imaging microscopes, laser capture dissection, tissue culture, histology, flow cytometry, electrophysiology and molecular biology.

About the Role

There are currently a number of different lines of research in our lab including stem cell therapy to treat gastrointestinal diseases, neural-immune interactions in the gut, and the influence of environmental contaminants on gut and organ function. You will be using different techniques to support the investigation of these questions including in vivo rodent animal models, in vitro cell and organ culture systems, gene expression analysis, and immunohistochemistry.

This role is predominately research related but will include some administrative duties. The position is initially for a 1-year period with the possibility of extension subject to funding.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct research individually and as part of a team
  • Complete molecular assays on cells and tissues, including RNA extraction and gene expression analysis (qPCR, ddPCR, RNA sequencing), DNA plasmid cloning, transfection and transduction of primary and iPSC-derived cell lines.
  • Perform in vivo experiments on transgenic mouse lines including intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections, oral gavage, in vivo gut motility assays, and animal monitoring.
  • Collection and processing of gastrointestinal tissues for immunohistochemistry and histology.
  • Examining cellular function using live calcium imaging.
  • Keep accurate experimental records, analyse results and prepare data for publication.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as maintaining laboratory databases, records of training, SOPs and inventories.
  • Actively participate in laboratory meetings, and Departmental meetings where appropriate.
  • About You You will bring your excellent attention to detail with demonstrated ability to consistently produce high-quality output and to meet established targets and deadlines. You will possess well-developed organisational as well as written/oral communication skills.

  • BSc honours degree (or higher) in biological or biomedical science
  • Experience working with laboratory mice including animal handling, mouse monitoring, gavage, and injections (IP and subcutaneous).
  • Practical lab skills in molecular techniques including PCR, cloning, RNA extraction and quantification.
  • Experience maintaining laboratory stocks, supplies and equipment, and ensuring high quality safety practices for the lab and its members
  • Other desirable attributes include experience with cell culture, viral vector synthesis, confocal microscopy and image analysis.
