Applications are invited for appointment as a Research Assistant II in LiDAR Remote Sensing in the School of Biological Sciences (Ref.: 520460), to commence on August 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter for six months, with possibility of extension, subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
Applicants should have a BSc. or above in Remote Sensing, Geography, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field. They should be fluent in written and spoken English. Research background in remote sensing, GIS, machine learning, and programming is highly preferred.
The appointee will work on using and processing LiDAR remote sensing data to advance the understanding of forest carbon stock and growth across the forest succession gradient in Hong Kong. Specifically, they will (1) conduct forest surveys across forest types in Hong Kong using a mobile LiDAR system with field team; (2) process the collected data and link them to field vegetation surveys collected by another field team and airborne LiDAR data from the government; (3) explore the patterns and drivers of forest carbon stock across forest successional gradients in Hong Kong; (4) develop machine learning models to scale up the field survey data to the whole of Hong Kong. The appointee will be jointly supervised by Dr. Calvin Lee (remote sensing and conservation expertise) and Dr. Jin Wu (plant ecophysiology expertise), as well as a strong collaborative team with broad expertise in remote sensing, machine learning, and ecosystem modelling. For further information, please contact Dr. Lee ([email protected]), Dr. Wu ([email protected]), or visit https: // wu-jin.weebly.com.
