  • About This Opportunity

    Genetic Research Services (GRS) provides high quality genetic services such as genotyping and sequencing to the UQ research community and external clients. The GRS team is made up of a facility manager and laboratory research assistants and supports UQBR (Biological Resources) in providing world class Animal Research services.

    With a specific focus on efficiency and accuracy, you will be responsible to perform the day-to-day activities of a high throughput genetic analysis laboratory including the use molecular biology techniques, sample preparation and processing, data analysis, equipment maintenance and general administrative duties. In addition, the role will provide broader support across the pipeline of genetically modified animal production

    Key responsibilities will include:

    Perform all aspects of genetic analysis and laboratory duties involving:

  • Sample collection and receiving into laboratory and sample submission execution.
  • Sample preparation and setting up of PCR's.
  • Loading plates and separation of PCR-amplified alleles on capillary electrophoresis machines or agarose gel.
  • Data analysis using data analysis software.
  • Processing of DNA Fragment Separation and DNA Sanger Sequencing samples.
  • Performing additional service genotyping as required.
  • Data entry and manipulation of data in excel.
  • Assist in the maintenance, calibration and upkeep of all laboratory equipment
  • All aspects of laboratory cleaning, stocktake, appropriate storage of laboratory reagents, samples and consumables items as required.
  • Providing technical advice and support to clients and researchers.
  • Assist with new service investigation, validation, and implementation.

  • Qualifications and training equivalent to an undergraduate degree in science or related field; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory techniques and to perform them routinely and at a high level of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to follow precise procedures and protocols with attention to detail.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate and comprehensive records.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Desirable

  • Experience in genetically modified mice genotyping and DNA Sanger sequencing
  • Experience in use of liquid handling robots/technology.
  • Experience in use of animal management databases.
  • What We Can Offer

    This is a part-time (30 hours) fixed-term position through to January 2026 at HEW Level 5.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,212 - $80,430 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,488 - $94,103 per annum.
