Research Assistant/Associate in Spoken Language Processing (Fixed Term)
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the
Department of Engineering, to work on an EPSRC funded project Multimodal Video
Search by Examples (MVSE). The project is a collaboration between three
Universities, Ulster, Surrey and Cambridge, and the BBC as an industrial
partner. The overall aim of the project is to enable effective and efficient
multimodal video search of large archives, such as BBC TV programmes.
The research associated with this position will focus on deriving
representation for all the information that is contained within the video
speech signal, and integrating with other modalities. The forms of
representation will include both: voice analytics e.g. speaker and emotion;
and topic and audio content analytics e.g. word-sequence and topic
classification and tracking. The position will involve close collaboration
with Surrey and Ulster Universities to integrate with other information
sources, video and the audio scene, to yield a flexible and efficient video
The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are to design and develop appropriate
methodologies to address the above research objectives. This will involve
planning and managing their own research activity and liaising with colleagues
in the Speech Research Group at Cambridge.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a
very good first degree in engineering, computer science or a closely related
field and have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD degree in an area
related to speech technology, or equivalent experience. It is expected that
candidates will have a good knowledge of speech software tools such as Kaldi,
and/or general deep-learning tools such as pyTorch. Good knowledge of Python
and C/C++ is desirable.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD, or
equivalent experience. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD
will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to
Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £27,116 - £31,406 Research Associate:
£33,309 - £40,927
