The Department of Applied Ecology integrates aspects of the broader fields of biology, ecology, genetics, toxicology, conservation and living resource management into a focused unit that employs novel approaches to confront local problems and global challenges. The department engages in highly collaborative research, education, and extension efforts that offer direct, practical solutions to current challenges in environmental and human well-being.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Assistant will oversee a multi-year black bear study in coastal North Carolina as part of the Hostetter Lab at North Carolina State University. The successful candidate will perform all duties, both in the field and laboratory to support this work and be able to independently conduct projects to this end. Because this is a new project, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping design and conduct research activities with a high degree of independence, in collaboration and consultation with the lead PI.
Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:
The successful candidate will work closely with scientists at North Carolina State University, USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Mississippi State University, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
At present, this position has funding for up to 24 months and is contingent on the continuation of funding.
The position will be located in North Carolina prior to the field season (January-April), during the field season (May-September; shared housing available, work vehicle provided), and assist with laboratory work at Mississippi State University (Starkville, MS) after the field season is complete (October 2023 through January 2024).
