Description

Research Assistant, APC Microbiome Ireland

6 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-time Post

Position summary

APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) was formed in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland and in conjunction with key industry partners. It represents a seamless collaboration between UCC, Teagasc, Moorepark and CIT. It is widely recognised that our microbiome (community of bacteria/viruses and fungi that live in and on our bodies) plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last decade the APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research. The APC has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 3000 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. APC Microbiome Ireland comprises over 300 individuals, from the scientific PI's (the APC Faculty) funded by the partner Institutions, the management team, and a dedicated group of research scientists, research assistants and postgraduate's students.

We are currently recruiting for a Research Assistant position for a project within the Brain-Gut Axis group, which addresses the communication between the brain and the gut, and how it can be influenced by the gastrointestinal microbiota. The term ‘psychobiotic' was coined by Dinan et al. Biol Psychiatry in 2013 as a ‘live organism that, when ingested in adequate amounts, produces a health benefit in patients suffering from a psychiatric illness. In this project, which will be conducted in collaboration with an industry partner, we aim to validate in vitro the predicted in silico properties of selected prebiotics. Prebiotics will be selected on the basis of promoting the growth of selected probiotic strains with potential for targeting cognitive function and reducing stress. We will also assess the potential impact(s) of prebiotics on microbiome-gut-brain axis pathways regulating synaptic development and neuronal activity.

Post Duration: 6 Months

Salary: €27,380- €36,786 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)

Project Title: Development and Validation of Targeted Prebiotics for Microbiome-gut-brain axis signalling
