Job Summary

A Research Area Specialist Senior position is available at the University of Michigan Functional Neuroimaging, Cognitive, and Mobility Laboratory in the Department of Radiology (pdresearch.rad.med.umich.edu). The lab is specialized in mobility and cognitive studies in patients with Parkinson's disease, older frail adults and dementia where participants may undergo brain PET or MR imaging, and/or may have pharmaceutical, neutriceutical, neurostimulation, physical activity or other interventions. The successful candidate will be expected to work under the supervision of the laboratory's faculty members but also functions independently with the administration of the lab.

Responsibilities

CLINICAL RESEARCH PROJECT MANAGEMENT (45%)

  • Helps PI develop, design, and conduct multiple complex research projects according to plan and reviews the progress of the projects. With proper background or experience in research may independently run research projects including regulatory roles.
  • Submit or assist with preparing IRB and other regulatory submission and audits for research studies.
  • Assist with preparation of case report forms.
  • Helps the PI formulate research methods and suggests options for improving quality, while identifying potential problems, and recommends and implements solutions.
  • For new research grant applications, helps to develop protocol and criteria, including design intervention protocols. With proper scientific/academic background may also apply for grants.
  • Gathers data and supervises data collection and verification.
  • Oversees all data management within the lab including, mobility sensor devices, electronic gait mat sensor devices, clinical data
  • Analyze data and assist with manuscript preparation.
  • Works closely with data manager in database design and development.
  • Assists with clinical evaluations of study participants.
  • Assist with writing Standard Operating Procedures for data analysis and management.
  • Perform quality control on all collected data.
  • Stay current with modern technology for equipment and software used in the research group.
  • Lab installation and decommission, which may include physical removal of equipment and desks.
  • LAB ADMINISTRATOR and SUPERVISOR (25%)

  • Assists PI with the administration of the lab.
  • Supervises research staff
  • Assists investigators with monitoring budgets.
  • Oversees VA-UM contracts for lab including a current PET and MRI imaging contract.
  • Researches, recommends and plays a decision maker role with purchasing new equipment.
  • Communicate on a consistent base with lab team members, supervisors, colleagues, and subordinates, providing input on laboratory operations.
  • REGULATORY OVERSIGHT & COMPLIANCE (20%)

  • Independently oversee and monitor compliance with FDA IND-sponsored studies.
  • Comply with all HIPAA and IRB regulations and deadlines.
  • Comply with all University of Michigan and/or VA regulations.
  • Comply with study radiation safety and FDA regulation guidelines.
  • Utilizes Central Radiology Clinical Trials office as needed for training, general support, preparing study records for internal Radiology audits.
  • EDUCATION (5%)

  • Train users in tests, study protocols, study procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Comply with University and/or VA, and IRB mandatory education requirements.
  • RESEARCH LIAISON (5%)

  • Acts as liaison with other research collaborators internally at UM and externally.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.
  • 5 to 6 years related experience.
  • Supervisory and financial management experience
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree or Doctorate degree in kinesiology or biomedical engineering is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are critical as well as the ability to collaborate with others and following standard research procedures.
  • Prior experience in conducting research is preferred as this may allow the candidate to directly oversee and conduct selective studies, including at the IRB level.
  • Experience in physical activity or movement science studies is a plus.
  • The candidate should be comfortable with working with Parkinson disease patients, (frail) older adults, or persons with dementia.

    Background Screening
