Promote and restore students' health as part of a multidisciplinary team through the assessment of care needs and the delivery of high quality primary medical care. This is position and will work 32 hours per week on day shift, weekend rotation required. This is a 10 month academic year position. Working August through May each year.

Job Duties

Duties include:

  • Willingness to learn and perform duties in electronic medical records.
  • Provide primary care for eligible students during scheduled health service hours.
  • Make independent nursing decisions based on standing orders, policies and procedures and the direction of medical providers.
  • Organize workload to ensure that the interests of the student and the needs of the college are being met.
  • Offer a welcoming and compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support for students.
  • Promote student independence by establishing a care plan and teaching students to understand their condition, medications and self-care skills.
  • Establish and maintain health records, documenting each patient contact and updating patient profiles both in paper form and in electronic medical records.
  • Ensure confidentiality during visits, telephone or online contact, and student medical records under HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.
  • Maintain effective communication, as permitted by consent for the release of information, with students, parents and other members of a multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and that the students' needs are met.
  • Distribute non-prescription medicine after appropriate assessment.
  • Assist clinician as needed during exams or procedures.
  • Refer students to the appropriate community resources and obtain signed releases from students if a copy of medical records is sent.
  • Act appropriately to protect both the student and the college with regard to risk management after thorough assessment and interpretation of a student's condition.
  • Operate within the guidelines established by OSHA and CLIA.
  • Assess the need for and competently perform multiple types of CLIA waived tests, such as Quickvue strep, infectious mononucleosis, urine hCG, and urine dips.
  • Perform phlebotomy or other specimen collections according to the guidelines set forth by the South Bend Medical Foundation, and arrange for the timely transport of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Track pending lab and other diagnostic test results, and report results to appropriate medical providers.
  • Advise the St. Joseph County Health Department of reportable diseases.
  • Promote campus health and safety as well as individual wellness through monitoring of student immunization histories and delivery of required immunizations.
  • Administer Tuberculin skin tests to foreign students from high-risk areas, students with a known risk of exposure, as well as employees and students whose practicum or job require compliance.
  • Administer allergy injection therapy to students under the direction of an allergist.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of Women's Health such as opening/closing, recycling, etc.
  • Order prescription medications as prescribed by medical providers and verify receipt of correct medications when delivered to Women's Health.
  • Utilize correct receipt management in billing students for medications and services that have assigned fees.
  • Encourage health maintenance and promotion through awareness/educational activities.
  • Supervise administrative and student assistants in their supportive roles of Women's Health.
  • Ensure operation of equipment by following manufacturer's instructions, conducting quality assurance testing, trouble-shooting malfunctions and calling for repairs as needed.
  • Maintain nursing supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels, anticipating needed supplies, placing orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies and using supplies judiciously to accomplish job results.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks.
  • Work effectively with a variety of members across the college community as well as individuals in the surrounding community.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze current CDC recommendations for student immunizations and travel abroad health, including recommending immunizations and disease medication prophylaxis for travel.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Required minimum of an Associate's Degree in Nursing; a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in Indiana.
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Basic TB Certification
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: medical/surgical, community health, emergency room, or in a physician's office.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse population of women.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess knowledge of and functions in accordance with Indiana state laws that relate to health issues and reporting.
  • Ability to produce documents in Word, Excel and Banner.
  • Good understanding of the nursing process and incorporate the steps of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the delivery of patient care.
  • Possess a high level of clinical nursing skills, including but not limited to: physical assessment including complete vitals, microscope use, glucometer, ECG, oxygen/pulse oximeter, AED, urine/HCG/mono/Strep test analysis, ear canal flushing, nebulizer treatment administration, venipuncture draws, injection administration and TB skin testing.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Has knowledge of a second language.
