    The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Economics and Business & Community Services (BCS) within the College of Business seeks applicants to fill a Regional Economist position. This position is a 9-month academic year renewable-term appointment and includes an additional 3-month summer appointment, with a flexible start date. This position will share duties between teaching for the Department of Economics and economics analysis and outreach for BCS at an approximate portfolio split of 40% teaching/60% service during the academic year. During the summer, this position will perform 100% analysis and outreach service.

    Teaching responsibilities include teaching two courses each semester and may include statistics, economics courses that contribute to the business core curriculum, courses that contribute to the business analytics curriculum, and/or courses related to regional economic analysis. In-person, on-campus teaching and regular office hours are required.

    BCS responsibilities will include conducting economic impact analyses, conducting target industry and industry cluster analyses, regional workforce assessments, and conducting competitive market intelligence research. This position will be responsible for writing research reports, other publications and client proposals, and making presentations to target audiences including economic development professionals, business and community leaders, and state agencies.

    The Regional Economist position will be expected to participate in state and national associations and networks representing BCS and build relationships with current and prospective clients. In addition, this position is expected to remain up-to-date on current and developing research techniques and tools, research trends, data sources, software and databases.

    The College of Business (business.uni.edu) is AACSB-accredited and offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in five departments (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management, and Marketing & Entrepreneurship) along with MBA and MAcc degrees. The College has 53 full-time faculty and 52 staff, and enrolls approximately 1,600 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students. The College is recognized as a "Best Business School" by The Princeton Review, listed among U.S. News & World Report's top part-time MBA programs, and as a Military Times Best for Vets: Business Schools. The College has a strong international presence, developing strategic alliances with several international business schools. The College has successfully maintained its tradition of teaching excellence while raising its scholarly profile, secured alternative sources of funding, and established a distinct strategic identity.

    The Department of Economics consists of 8 faculty members and around 100 undergraduate students majoring in the department. The department has a history of teaching excellence evidenced by the active engagement of our students. Faculty are committed to high quality scholarship, are recognized in their fields, and support the College's commitment to the scholar/teacher model. The department is known for their collegial and supportive environment in both scholarship and teaching, with opportunities for department seminars and collaboration. The department supports the MBA program, on campus and internationally.

    Business & Community Services consists of 13 unique outreach programs working towards a common goal of "Building a Better Iowa." With over more than 50 professional staff, BCS programs serve clients across Iowa and around the country. For 22 straight years, BCS programs have served clients in all of Iowa's 99 counties. BCS programs work with businesses, entrepreneurs, communities, nonprofits and governments, providing a wide array of services including marketing research and business incubation, to environmental assistance, to additive manufacturing technical assistance, to community and economic development assistance and research. Whenever feasible, BCS programs engage UNI faculty and staff in their work assisting clients. The individual hired for this position will be a member of the Institute for Decision Making (IDM) staff and will work with a variety of the BCS programs, but will initially be primarily working on projects for IDM and Strategic Marketing Services.

    Education Requirements:

    Master's degree.

    Required Qualifications:

    Required qualifications include at least three years of experience in conducting regional economic research and economic analysis including building and conducting economic impact assessments (via IMPLAN or other input-output software) at local and regional levels; performing text analysis using R or similar software; developing data visualization using Tableau, Power BI or similar software; and effectively communicating with a variety of audiences via written reports, articles, and oral presentations.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D.; experience in teaching, meeting project deadlines, working in teams on projects; using government and proprietary data sources, databases, including Census, BLS, BEA, EMSI/Lightcast, etc.; SPSS or other statistical software; and GIS software (e.g., ESRI).
