Academic Lead, Gateway to Medicine Programme. 12 months. 0.40% FTE

Grade 8/9 or commensurate with current clinical salary

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as the academic lead for the Gateway to Medicine Programme. Programme details can be found at https: // www. dundee.ac.uk/undergraduate/medicine-gateway. This is a one-year programme which prepares students for entry to the undergraduate medical programme by helping them to meet criteria for entry.

The programme is flexible and to some extent tailored to meet the needs of individual students – for example students are supported to meet the criteria relating to specific subjects such as chemistry or maths where required as well as engage in more generic aspects of preparation such as studying healthcare systems and shadowing medical students.

Modules for students are currently provided by a range of other University Schools, for example, the School of Life Sciences, School of Science and Engineering, so this role includes close working with module leads in these schools.

There are typically 15-20 students in the cohort. The programme is a significant part of the School of Medicine's Widening Participation portfolio, and the post holder will be required to contribute to related aspects of this work.

Currently, the Gateway programme is a direct route of entry into Dundee's MBChB for students who meet specified academic performance and professionalism standards. The programme is due for review (December 2022) and may change substantially as a result. The post holder will have a significant role in the revisioning of the Gateway programme, to articulate closely with the newly revised MBChB curriculum.

Your priorities will include:

• Contributing to (or co-lead, depending on the timeframe for appointment) the review of the programme in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Learning & Teaching, Associate Dean for Quality and Academic Standards, the MBChB Programme Director, the Head of the Undergraduate Education Division of the School of Medicine and relevant academic staff and professional services and support staff. • Liaising with the wider university community currently involved in the teaching and learning, as well as pastoral support of Gateway students to ensure efficient and effective delivery of the programme. • Working closely with the Professional Services team to ensure efficient and quality assured programme coordination, teaching and learning objectives, and pastoral support for students. • Leading the design and delivery of the curriculum.

Who we're looking for:

• A degree in natural and/or health sciences. • A postgraduate educational qualification • An understanding of Widening Participation policies and/or delivery of initiatives. • Previous experience of working with undergraduate students, including the provision of academic and pastoral support. • Knowledge, understanding and experience of educational theory, processes and good practice and experience of applying them in curricular design, delivery and evaluation.

For further information about this position please refer to the attached job description or contact Dr Georgina Cairns, Gateway to Medicine Programme Lead at g.a.cairns@dundee.ac.uk or Dr Stella Howden, Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching, School of Medicine at s.howden@dundee.ac.uk

The closing date for applications is 14 August 2022.
