At the Lisbon School of Architecture of the Universidade de Lisboa
(FA.ULisboa), there is an open call for the award of 1 (one) Research
Initiation Grant to a student enrolled in a Master's course, financed
exclusively by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia , IP (FCT, IP),
under the Program Contract, within the scope of the multiannual funding of R&D
Units with Ref:ª UIDB/04008/2020, to develop activities in the DES Project –
Graphic Design for Emergency Situations, of the Center Research in
Architecture, Urbanism and Design (CIAUD).
The Research Initiation Grant is scheduled to start in June 2022. The
contract, with an initial duration of 3 (three) months, on an exclusive
basis, eventually renewable for two additional periods of 3 (three) months
each.
The “DES – Graphic Design for Emergency Situations” project focuses on the
role of communication design in crisis situations and their prevention. In a
world where sustainability is one of the main challenges and climate change is
expected to trigger new episodes of crisis, communication, supported by
science and design, is crucial to face and overcome them. Departing from the
crisis generated by the covid-19 pandemic, we intend to develop a broad
reflection on the theme of Graphic Design for Emergency Situations, exploring
bibliographical references and compiling and critically analysing
communication design objects produced in this context, to extract knowledge
applicable in future situations.
Benefits
Amount of monthly maintenance allowance and Social Security:
1 - The value of the monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to € 486.12
(ffour hundred and eighty-six euros and twelve cents), paid monthly by bank
transfer, under the terms of the FCT Research Grant Regulation, IP, published
through the Regulation no. 950/2019 in the Diário da República, 2nd series,
no. 241, of 16 December, and available at the link:

2 - The grant holder to be hired may exercise his right to social security, by
joining the voluntary social insurance regime, under the terms set out in the
Research Grant Holder Statute, with the funding entities assuming the costs
resulting from the contributions provided for in that Statute.
Eligibility criteria
- Currently attending the Communication Design Master degree.
- Interest in research in Communication Design.
- Scientific writing in Portuguese and English.
Selection process
The selection methods will include a Curricular Evaluation (CE) and,
eventually, a Selection Interview (SI). If the jury decides to carry out the
Selection Interview, only the three best classified in the CE will be
interviewed. In this case, the final evaluation of the candidates will have
the following weighting: 40%CE + 60%SI.
