The Marine Operations Department is comprised of a dedicated group of professionals whose primary function is to provide safe access to the marine environment for all students, staff, faulty and other users and to support the needs of these users as they relate to vessels, field support services, instrument fabrication, equipment repair and servicing.

Position Summary

Marine Operations seeks highly motivated applicants to apply for their Research Vessel (R/V) Mate, The successful candidate will join a cohesive team of professionals, working in unison while at sea.

The Research Vessel (R/V) Mate serves as Mate primarily on the R/V Bay Eagle (65 ft), but may also serve as the Mate on the R/V Tidewater (43 ft), M/V Tyndall Pointe (35 ft), and other trailered vessels as needed. The R/V Mate may also provide crewing relief by sailing as an Able Seamen (AB) as needed on R/V Virginia (93 ft). While on all vessels, this position ensures that all federal and state maritime regulations are observed and complied with during the operations of VIMS research vessels.

Reporting to the Marine Safety Officer via the Senior R/V Captain, the R/V Mate assists in all shipboard activities and will be expected to take the initiative to ensure the safe operation of the deck as well as the operation of all shipboard systems. The Research Vessel Mate ensures that all VIMS rules and policies are followed while conducting field operations. Understands and ·maintain operation of VIMS vessels as it applies to conducting varying scientific operations. Also will be required to shop for provisions and may be required to cook dinners for the crew.

Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Operates various davits, frames, cranes, and winches as necessary to accomplish each specific scientific operation in a safe and efficient manner.

Participates in the maintenance and operation of all deck, vessel systems, and safety equipment. Assumes overall responsibility for the cleanliness and maintenance of the vessels, inventory of scientific equipment, and proper stowage on the vessel prior to leaving port.

Helps to ensure operational readiness of assigned vessel as it relates to accomplishing the scientific objectives including assisting in the mobilization/demobilization of scientific equipment.

Conducts safety briefings prior to departure as determined by the Marine Safety Officer and as directed by the vessel Captain. Utilizes a Computer Maintenance Management Software program to help ensure vessels are current on maintenance and safety equipment is inspected and inventoried.

Required Qualifications

Education / Certifications:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Merchant Mariner Credential.

Certified First Aid / CPR (or ability to obtain within three months of hire)

Valid Driver's License

Competencies:

Working knowledge of various research vessels and related equipment.

Knowledge and skills of electronic maintenance management systems.

Demonstrated skills in marine safety practices, with the ability to ensure safety equipment is inspected and inventoried.

Proficiency with MS Office Applications and the ability to use web-based applications.

Excellent communication and interactive skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups.

Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform all responsibilities while being exposed to inclement weather at sea for extended periods of time.

Ability to pass USCG mandated drug screening and submit to a random drug testing program.

Ability to work in hot/confined spaces.

Experience:

Deckhand experience (Tug Boats, Passenger Vessels, Commercial Fishing Vessels, Charter Vessels Etc.)

Experience working long days (12 hours or more), including weekends and holidays, in a maritime environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Education / Certification:

Bachelor's degree in the technical or marine-related field, or the equivalent combination of education. training and experience directly related to the position.

Able Bodied Seaman, OUPV, or 100-ton Master credential issued by the United States Coast Guard.

Competencies:

Knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

Demonstrated Mechanical skills, including the maintenance of marine diesel systems.

Working knowledge of VIMS vessels, their systems, and the operation of those vessels as it applies to conducting varying scientific operations.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience working on Research Vessels or Commercial Fishing Vessels.

Experience having worked with Computer Maintenance Management Systems as well as Safety Management Systems.

This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive over time in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and University policy. This position is subject to over-time to include working evenings, nights and holidays.
