Primary Purpose of the Position

Winston-Salem State University announces a national search for the R.J. Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education (CASBE). This full-time, nine-month Distinguished Professorship begins in August 2022. This distinguished professorship is a prestigious designation for a faculty member who has earned prominence for scholarly and professional achievements in computer science or information technology. Faculty in the Department of Computer Science will give special consideration to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and/or research with interests in one or more of discipline focus points of the department, including: software engineering, data analytics, computer science education, game development, gamification, artificial intelligence, machine/deep learning, cybersecurity, databases, mobile computing, cloud computing, robotics, computer graphics, internet of things, computer networks, visualization, or human-centered computing.

The candidate would also be expected to provide leadership in research, teaching and service to the professional discipline and the Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community; maintain the highest level of quality in undergraduate and graduate instruction to support the ABET accredited BS in Computer Science and Information Technology programs, as well as the MS in Computer Science and Information Technology program and certificate and minor programs offered by the department. The candidate would be expected to attract external funding, contribute to the execution of the department and university strategic plan; work collaboratively with members of the department and other departments and develop external collaborations with other academic institutions and industry.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or closely related area.

Successful candidate must be tenurable at the rank of Professor within the Computer Science department at WSSU.

A proven record of excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Demonstrate an active research agenda supported by extramural funding and a illustrate an active publication record

A proven record of engaging and mentoring students in research activity.

Evidence of establishing partnerships with business and industry that advance the mission of the unit, the research agenda, and student engagement.

Experience in delivery of both on-campus and on-line classes preferred

A proven record of academic leadership, including evidence of leadership related to initiatives in computing.

A proven record of commitment to and success in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in computer science.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science and information technology using face-to-face, online and hybrid course delivery approaches. Teaching load encompasses one course per semester and deliver a series of cutting edge discipline seminars. The successful candidate will communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes. Detailed course syllabi must be developed facilitating high quality, engaging instruction to students with diverse learning styles. The successful candidate will have an active research agenda and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
