About the role:

The Research Fellow will focus on undertaking research into the impact of venomous injuries in Australia. They will establish and maintain a database of venomous injuries using data obtained from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the National Coronial Information System. Epidemiological approaches including geospatial analysis will be applied to these to better inform Australians of the risk of venomous injuries and identify potential areas from injury prevention.

About you:

  • A PhD Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Geographic Information Systems, Toxinology or another relevant discipline.
  • Skills and Experience required to fulfil the position:
  • Knowledge of epidemiological methods including research design, survey design, data collection, qualitative/quantitative methods, trend and/or cross-sectional data, medical chart abstraction, data repository systems, statistical data analysis, mathematical modelling, geospatial data analysis, data quality assurance, and program evaluation.
  • Knowledge of the pathways between direct and indirect risk factors and outcomes, and the range/complexity of data sources and analytical strategies needed to accurately quantify venomous bite and sting disease burden.
  • Experience working with statistical packages, Microsoft Excel to import/export, manage large data sets (data cleaning, data mining, data matching/merging), and minimally analyse data (e.g., descriptive statistics).
  • Proven track record in assessing epidemiological data to inform preventive health strategies and priorities.
  • A demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a key member of a diverse, multi-disciplinary team.
