JOBTITLE: Library Assistant

DEPARTMENT: The Library at Southeastern

DIVISION: Academic Affairs

SUPERVISOR: Circulation Supervisor (Direct -- Responsible for Floor and Circulation), Reference Coordinator (Responsible for Reference)

PAY RATE: $10.00 per hour

HOURS: 21 hours per week

  • PURPOSE OF THE JOB
  • Responsible for providing excellent customer service to the Southeastern community in three public service areas of the library: Circulation, Floor, and Reference

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Staffs the Circulation Desk by welcoming patrons in a friendly manner, assisting them with basic circulation functions, and providing general information about the services offered by the library (33%)
  • Maintains the circulating and reference library collections by shelving, straightening, and shelf reading (33%)
  • Assists patrons at the Reference Desk by guiding them with research, teaching them how to use library resources, and helping them locate helpful research materials (33%)
  • OTHER DUTIES & REPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures Circulation and Reference desks are organized well

  • KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Required:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work well as a team
  • Preferred:

  • One year library/customer service experience
  • Basic computer knowledge (eg. Microsoft Word)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Desired:

  • Knowledge of basic research skills
  • Ability to relate well to people in stressful situations

  • Walking three floors of the library, lifting boxes, pushing book carts, and standing for extended period of time

  • Ability to work up to 29 hours a week, including evenings and Saturdays, at the discretion of the department, depending on scheduling needs, budget, and class schedule
