This position is located on the campus of the State University of New York at Old Westbury. Employment, payroll and benefits are through and subject to the Research Foundation for SUNY policies and procedures. The Research Foundation for SUNY is a private educational corporation. This is a grant funded position.

Job Description:

The mission of the SUNY Old Westbury Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) is to increase the number of students from under-represented groups who are pursuing careers in the sciences, mathematics and technological fields, health related fields or one of the licensed professions in New York State. STEP provides structured services which contribute to the academic and professional success of program participants.

SUNY Old Westbury's STEP program is looking for a responsible, enthusiastic, and creative team member to work with our Co-Directors to meet program goals. As a vital member of the office team, the Project Staff Assistant/ Associate will support the processes to recruit and enroll students in STEP. The Project Staff Assistant/ Associate stays informed on all STEP policies, programs and events to provide accurate and up to date information.

The STEP Project Staff Assistant/Associate provides administrative, event planning and organizational support to the STEP Co-Directors. The ideal candidate must be able to handle multiple tasks and be exceedingly well organized and detail oriented. It is important for this candidate to have strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with faculty, staff and students with a high level of professionalism.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance to Co-Directors in day-to-day management of STEP activities.
  • Maintain accurate up-to-date calendars and track correspondence, including email.
  • Assist with recruitment of students to STEP, including students' application review and site visits to participating schools.
  • Maintain an electronic database/student roster and compile the data necessary for reports.
  • Track the STEP students' participation and progress, and compile the data necessary for reports.
  • Track professional outcomes of STEP students, including alumni, and maintain the database.
  • Assist with execution and assessment of STEP activities and workshops to assist students in achieving academic and professional success including but not limited to creating applications and promotional materials.
  • Create and maintain a database of internship and research opportunities for students.
  • Assist with supervision of research aides, tutors, and peer mentors.
  • Provide assistance with the organization of conferences and professional trips.
  • Provide general program management and administrative support as assigned to ensure program success.

    Salary Range: $40,000 - $50,000 plus excellent benefits compensation package to include health, dental, vision, 403B, employer contribution for retirement; paid time off for sick, vacation, holidays and more.

    Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm, 37.5 hours per week. Availability to work on Saturdays in the Fall and Spring Semesters will be required in support of special projects and events. Occasional travel to overnight conferences, site visits to participating school districts, day trips may be required.

    Requirements:

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in an appropriate field.
  • Two (2) years of full-time, professional, related experience.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in working effectively with students from historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged groups.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and interpersonal skills are required for liaison functions with various administrative units and external agencies.
  • Strong computer skills in all components of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong commitment to the goals of the STEP program.
