Position Summary

The Center on Aging and Health is seeking a Research Specialist. This research program will focus on understanding social contextual factors and their influence on the health and well-being of older adults and caregivers living with hematological cancers. The overall goal is to provide a personalized approach to the care of older adults, especially those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The Research Manager will work with Dr. Jan Busby- Whitehead to build this new research program, oversee day-to-day operations of the full team, and collaborate with the department to determine next steps of research program. Project management responsibilities include: managing day-to-day operations, project development, and IRB (institutional review board) applications. monitoring adherence to protocols, keeping records of research activities, and quality control across various platforms. managing grant budgets, interfacing with business office personnel, assuring timeline and appropriate spending of grant funds, making budgetary recommendations, and contract negotiations. coordinating multiple concurrent tasks and interface with a multidisciplinary team, including graduate students, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, hematologists or oncologists, public health professionals, and other research and administrative staff. It will also require in-person interactions with potential patient study participants and the conduct of basic qualitative and quantitative data analyses. This position will interface with collaborators in Social Sciences and other departments and centers at the University of North Carolina and nationally.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Candidates for this position must possess excellent organizational skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, inherent self-motivation, and demonstrated capacity to work independently and apply innovative and proactive approaches to problem-solving in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. This position requires dedication to research addressing social disparities concerning older adults with cancer and their informal caregivers. Also required is the ability to orient other personnel in data collection and quality control techniques and establish and maintain effective working relationships with research team members, physicians, researchers, managers, representatives of other agencies/facilities, and community-engaged partners.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Master's preferred in Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field.

2 years' experience in a research-related field and experience independently managing research, including designing and operationalizing studies, quality assurance, and business operations, including comprehensive budget management.

Preference will be given to the candidate with the following relevant experience: managing multidisciplinary research projects; interviewing research participants from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds; conducting literature reviews; grant writing; analyzing qualitative data using Atlas ti or similar software; analyzing quantitative data using Stata or SAS; preparing reports to funding agencies, including the National Institutes of Health; preparing and managing research budgets; preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication; preparing reports and applications to Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and in-depth knowledge of and facility with Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook Calendar, and Endnote.
