Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Project Manager (Sustainability and Energy) at the University of Essex.

We may consider appointing on a developmental basis. Appointments at Grade 9 will be expected to take a lead in the duties listed below; appointments at Grade 8 will work more closely with colleagues and under the supervision of the Head of Energy and Carbon Reduction.

It is anticipated that appointees to Grade 8 will progress onto Grade 9 provided they are able to meet the additional responsibilities, skills and expertise demanded by the higher grade within a 12-month period.

Applicants with less than extensive working experience in the areas specified are encouraged to apply as training and development will be provided subject to overall aptitude and assessed technical capability.

About the role

Delivering the University's carbon reduction and environmental aspirations will require significant change, through behavioural change and to the built environment.

Reporting to the Head of Carbon and Energy Reduction, you will project manage revenue and capital projects related to the University's climate and sustainability work and its reduction in energy, carbon and water use, ensuring they are efficiently and effectively delivered. Providing the Sustainability Section with a high-quality project management function, you will deliver a diverse range of projects from c.£10k to c.£5m+, including large scale PV, HVAC, ground/air source heat, M&E, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), lighting, control systems, BMS, metering and building fabric.

Assisting the Head of Energy and Carbon Reduction in formulating Carbon Management Plans and developing project delivery programmes you will also contribute to the creation of Project Mandates and Business Cases for committee approval and in conjunction with others, develop, review, analyse and implement competitive tender documents and contractual documentation.

You will need to

  • Act as the Principal Designer under CDM Regulations or ensure one is appointed.
  • Effectively appoint and manage consultancy services.
  • Identify and manage approved contractors.
  • Closely monitor site works ensuring standards and quality are maintained at all times.
  • Ensure compliance and Health and Safety matters are a fundamental part of all delivered projects.
  • You will also need

  • Professional qualification in building/facilities/services/energy and hold a corporate membership (Energy Institute, CIBSE – MCIBSE, IET – MIET or above).
  • CDM and/or Principal Designer qualification (RIBA) - deisrable for G8.
  • Ability to successfully deliver multiple strategic, complex projects.
  • Knowledge and experience working under CDM regulations.
  • About you

    You will have a proven track record of delivering projects up to and over £1m in value, experience of project managing M&E, energy and carbon reduction projects and managing a project team, capital programme of works and project budgets. You will have knowledge of M&E building systems, HVAC systems, BMS, electrical distribution, lighting, controls, metering and the built environment and knowledge and experience working under CDM regulations. You will have the ability to successfully deliver multiple strategic, complex projects, safely, on time, on budget and on programme.
