Job Summary
The Director is primarily responsible for the oversight, implementation and
assessment of all experiential education activities at the College of
Pharmacy. The Director supervises the Assistant Program Director for
Experiential Education, and support staff in the accomplishment of these
duties. The Director works in a collaborative manner with school faculty as
well as area preceptors and health care organizations to achieve the essential
duties and responsibilities of the position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Includes the following, with other duties that may be assigned by the
Associate Dean of Academic Affairs or the Dean of the College of Pharmacy.
Oversee the daily operation of the Office of Experiential Education.
Establish and revise experiential education policies and procedures as needed.
Develop and implement program objectives and long-range planning for experiential education.
Work with Regional Dean's to ensure appropriate quantity and quality of advanced pharmacy practice sites.
Identify and recruit quality advanced pharmacy practice experience sites
Provide site development for advanced pharmacy practice experiences
Perform regular phone and on-site visits that focus on enhancing teaching and learning.
Assess the quality of advanced pharmacy practice sites and recommend areas for improvement.
Ensure appropriate quality and quantity of advanced pharmacy practice preceptors.
Identify and recruit quality advanced pharmacy practice experience preceptors
Provide an orientation for all new preceptors
Provide general training programs for preceptors from all areas at least yearly.
Provide individualized preceptor training for all preceptors at least once every two years, and more often if necessary.
Assist preceptors in improving practice and teaching abilities as needed
Assess the performance of advanced pharmacy practice experience preceptors and recommend areas for improvement.
Maintain and keep up to date CORE
Ensure Preceptor and site databases are kept current
Maintain appropriate documentation to meet ACPE accreditation standards.
Maintain an efficient and fair method for assigning advanced practice experiences that optimizes use of quality sites, student learning and resource utilization.
Oversee the recruitment, development and assessment of appropriate practice sites and preceptors for introductory practice experiences.
Organize and oversee student orientation to experiential courses
Develop, implement and maintain an orientation program for advance practice experiences.
Oversee the development, implementation and maintenance of orientations to introductory pharmacy practice experiences.
Develop and publish the advanced practice experience calendar annually
Establish and maintain contractual/affiliation agreements between the University and approved practice sites throughout the state and in other states.
Develop proposals for experiential training initiatives and in association with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, obtain support for new and/or continuing activities
Maintain regular contact with students and preceptors on advanced practice experiences.
Counsel, coach and advise Pharm.D. candidates
Monitor student, preceptor and site evaluations on a routine basis
Resolve experiential learning problems with full-time and contracted services faculty
Maintain the Advanced Practice Experience manuals
Edit and publish the advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Student Manual annually
Edit and publish the advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Preceptor Manual annually
Oversee the editing and publishing of the IPPE Student and Preceptor Manuals
Collaborate with Regional Dean's and School Directors to manage experiential education courses.
Maintain relationships with state and national practitioner organizations and AACP related to experiential education
Actively participate in state and national practitioner organizations where possible
Actively participate in AACP and, in particular, the AACP Experiential Education Section. serve on professional, college and university committees as assigned.
Other responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs
or the Dean.
Minimum Qualifications
Degree in Pharmacy from an ACPE accredited program, licensed in the state of
Louisiana, and experience teaching students in the practice setting
(preferred). Knowledge of health professional programs and practice
cultures. Five (5) or more years of experience as an RPh (preferred).
