Occupational Summary

The Duke Biosciences Collaborative for Research Engagement (BioCoRE) Program is the signature PhD student diversity initiative within the IDEALS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advancement, and Leadership in the Sciences) Office. The IDEALS Office seeks to maximize the recruitment and retention efforts for trainees from historically excluded and underserved backgrounds. Working closely with campus partners such as the Graduate School, the Office of Postdoctoral Services at Duke, and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Office of Biomedical Graduate Education within the Duke School of Medicine, the IDEALS office serves doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical sciences to provide access to university-wide resources and support systems.

The goal of BioCoRE is to create a strong and supportive a community of diverse PhD students who are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Diversity and Inclusion, the Program Director will lead all programmatic efforts, providing independent leadership, oversight and infrastructure to academic and social programs and events. In addition, the Program Director will assist with financial administration of BioCoRE scholars Early Start program funds and the professional development funds provided their second year. Facilitate cross- institutional interactions between relevant offices from the School of Medicine, the Graduate School, the Pratt School of Engineering, and Trinity College.

Overall, the Program Director will mentor and oversee over 100 graduate Scholars.

Work Performed

BioCoRE Scholar Support

  • Manage Student Leadership Committees, BioCoRE peer mentoring programs, and Prelim PREP group established to give scholars ownership in the activities and direction of the BioCoRE community
  • Conduct one-on-one check ins with each BioCoRE scholar
  • Programming

  • Lead programming related to the Duke BioCoRE Program Conceive, organize, coordinate, advertise, and successfully execute BioCoRE programming, including workshops, seminars, social events, and career development initiatives for all BioCoRE Scholars.
  • Organize and lead the “Early Start” program for incoming scholars through coordinating academic, community building, and career development programming to take place during the four-week summer program for all graduate BioCoRE Scholars.
  • Spearhead the planning and facilitation of the annual BioCoRE retreat. Helping to identify, invite and coordinating the conference facilitating connections and collaborations with partner institutions in the areas of research, curricular/instructional support and community engagement.
  • Recruitment

  • Represent Duke BioCoRE at conferences and arrange Scholar attendance to represent Duke BioCoRE at scientific conferences; promote recruitment of students to the program; manage travel and attendance logistics.
  • Provide information regarding BioCoRE during graduate program interviews at departmental specific events and joint information sessions and actively work with BioCoRE-affiliated departments and program admissions to advertise and recruit prospective PhD students from diverse backgrounds to Duke.
  • Collaboration

  • Identify new and maintain established collaborations with partner institutions including relevant STEM departments at regional HBCUs, MSIs and or STEM diversity initiatives at PWIs.
  • Develop partnerships with other IMSD Program Coordinators and serve as the lead liaison in the Mid-Atlantic PREP and IMSD Research Symposium group; establish administrative links and collaborations with partner institutions.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

    Required Qualifications at this Level

    Education/Training

    Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Candidates with a background in a STEM discipline preferred.

    Experience

    Work requires the ability to plan and administer programs and direct program activities within a specific functional area, generally acquired through four years of related experience.
