The Vetsuisse Faculty at the University of Bern, Switzerland, invites applications for the position of Professor in Veterinary Dermatology (Extraordinariat or assistant professor tenure track) at the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science. The position is available January 1st, 2024 or upon mutual agreement.

The University of Bern is a comprehensive university offering a broad choice of courses and programs in eight faculties. The Vetsuisse Faculty Bern provides veterinary education for around 500 students. The undergraduate education in veterinary medicine in Switzerland is organised jointly with the Vetsuisse Faculty at the University of Zürich.


The successful candidate will be Head of the Clinical Dermatology Unit. The main tasks include teaching of veterinary medicine students, clinical service for companion animals, horses and livestock and supervision of ECVD/ACVD residents. Successful candidates are expected to develop a strong research program in veterinary dermatology, and to supervise master and doctoral students (DVM and/or PhD). Collaborations within the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, but also with the Departments of Infectious Diseases and Pathobiology and/or Clinical Research and Veterinary Public Health are expected. Possible research topics include (but are not limited to): genodermatoses, immunology and skin tumours.


Mandatory requirements are: (I) a recognised Veterinary diploma, (II) a diploma of the European College of Veterinary Dermatology (ECVD) or the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD), (III) a PhD or an equivalent academic qualification, and (IV) research activities in the field of veterinary dermatology. The successful candidate has at least basic knowledge of the German and/or French languages, and is willing to improve these language skills to efficiently teach students and communicate with patient owners. The quality of previous research, the amount of research funds raised, as well as experience in teaching and personnel management are important selection criteria.

The facilities of the Veterinary Dermatology unit are located within the small animal hospital. Within the faculty, there are great opportunities for research collaborations, e.g. in the field of inherited skin disorders and the possibility to use complex 3D in vitro skin models.
