Position Overview

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

NCCU's Department of Art and Design offers students the opportunity to earn a B.A. degree in Art with concentrations in Visual Communication, Studio Art, of Art Studies. The Department is considering offering new concentrations in Animation and Interactive Media and Pre-Architecture. The Department's overarching mission is to foster broad inquiry within the visual arts and design to provide opportunities for students to study non-western, diverse cultural artifacts and experiences. As the first public liberal arts institution founded for African Americans, NCCU occupies a special niche that informs the study of art and design. In addition to traditional training in the visual arts, the Department of Art and Design proudly celebrates and fosters the study of artistic productions of African and African American culture, emphasizing the past and present contributions of people of color. With such emphasis, the Department provides a uniquely designed curriculum to educate students pursuing visual arts and design careers in today's global society. Art and Design majors explore technology, engage in internships, pursue individuality and enjoy the fruits of cultural diversity.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Department of Art and Design in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is inviting applications for the position of SunTrust Endowed Chair in painting and drawing. The person selected for the Endowed Chair will focus on teaching, scholarship and creative activities in Art and Design, as well as participate in departmental service, recruitment and fundraising. The Endowed Chair will teach two courses per semester (foundations, intermediate and advanced courses) in painting, drawing and design.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The Department is seeking an individual with a nationally recognized reputation as a visual artist who will continue to have a productive and successful career as a practicing artist locally and nationally. The successful candidate must exhibit a dedication to developing and mentoring students in the areas of drawing, painting, design, and the business of art. In addition, as a member of the faculty the Endowed Chair will work to develop academic programs and co-curricular activities that will enhance student success as well as cultivate and initiate relationships within the greater community.

Minimum Education/Experience

The successful candidate should hold a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Art with the appropriate area concentrations and a strong record of teaching, scholarship and creative activities to be tenured, or appointed at the assistant (distinguished fellow), associate (distinguished scholar), or full professor rank (distinguished professor). Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.
