  • Role Description

    The Hull York Medical School is a different kind of Medical School. The joint medical school of the Universities of Hull and York, have a reputation as one of the UK's most exciting, contemporary schools. It's innovative curriculum and focus on problem based learning and early and sustained clinical exposure ensures that students on the MB BS programme develop the problem solving, analytical and communication skills and resilience needed to deliver a high standard of care to people with complex needs and from a variety of backgrounds. The School is currently undergoing expansion following a successful bid to increase the number of undergraduate medical student places. It therefore has an ambitious strategy for growth and diversification of both research and educational programmes. This post has been possible as a result of investment in academic positions as a result of the expansion.

    The Role The University are seeking to recruit an established, internationally- recognised clinical academic haematologist to help lead and build a Centre of Excellence in Haematology within the York Biomedical Research Institute. The post holder will have an established track record of publications and research grant income and be working in an area of haematology that provides new synergistic opportunities within and beyond HYMS and the York Biomedical Research Institute. They will contribute to teaching on the HYMS MBBS course and the joint HYMS / Biology BSc and MBiomedSci in Biomedical Sciences in a manner commensurate with the role. Suitable clinical sessions will be arranged within the region according to the particular interests of appointee.

    Skills, Experience & Qualification required

  • PhD in Haematology
  • MRCP (UK), FRCPath or an equivalent qualification
  • Well-established national and international reputation in research related to Haematology
  • Proven ability to develop innovative research proposals and attract research funding
  • Ability to mentor, manage, motivate and coordinate research teams, delegating effectively. Ability to resolve performance issues and formulate staff development plans, where appropriate, to ensure team aims are met
  • Experience as co- and principal investigator on externally funded research projects
  • An excellent track record in publishing high quality research papers
  • Experience of supervising postgraduate students
