Professor in Practice in Accounting (Johnstone Smith Chair of Accountancy)

Job Purpose

The role will focus on three areas, to: (1) Undertake a leadership role in enhancing connections with practice in the Adam Smith Business School, and to develop and support the growth of applied research, engagement and impact related to the School's world-class research. (2) Make a substantial contribution to enhancing learning and teaching within the Adam Smith Business School to include professional and executive education, experiential learning and embedding graduate attributes in the curriculum. (3) Take substantial responsibility for promoting business, professional, organisational and policy relationships in ways that enhance the reputation of the School and the University, supporting the development of colleagues, strengthening the School's professional focus, and enhancing outreach and pubic understanding.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Engage with colleagues in the Adam Smith Business School, including through research, scholarship and knowledge exchange clusters and in the learning and teaching programmes that feature experiential learning prominently.

2. Promote and lead the School's activities featuring connections with practice and professional focus.

3. Take a role in developing and implementing the Adam Smith Business School's strategy for connections with practice, noting the critical role of this in business school accreditations and rankings internationally.

4. Maintain a track record of knowledge co-creation and co-development in the context of business, organizational and policy practice along with contributions to public understanding.

5. Develop and support strategic partnerships with business, organizations and policymakers.

6. Contribute to income growth derived from applied research, professional and executive education, and commercialization opportunities and related activities in strategy and technology, operations and innovation, and/or entrepreneurship.

7. In collaboration, support bids for major projects to bodies such as UKRI and Innovate UK, which include dimensions of practice, knowledge exchange, and innovation.

8. Develop collegiality across the School by fostering effective internal and external networks and collaborations that support the development and mentoring of academic and professional services colleagues.

9. Make a substantial contribution to the life of the School through active involvement in its committees and working groups and by contributing to learning and teaching on undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional and executive programs; supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations; and attracting research students.

10. Represent the School/College/University on key external bodies and at external events (regional, national and international) to promote excellence in strategy and technology, operations and innovation, and/or entrepreneurship research and teaching and the development of connections with practice.

11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in relevant subject.

A2 An established and internationally recognised reputation for high-quality applied research and knowledge exchange in accounting and/or auditing.

A3 Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of research and policy issues and debates, nationally and internationally, and future direction of research and teaching in the subject area.

A4 A track record of generating funding and resourcing in applied research and commercialization activities from a range of sources.

A5 Fellowship or Membership of a relevant professional body.

E2 Significant experience of applied research, advising or consulting, and participation within significant international collaborations.

E3 Extensive track record of successfully securing funding and resourcing, and project managing applied research, consultancy, advising or commercialization activities to completion.

E4 Significant participation at practitioner, professional or academic conferences, symposia and/or holding visiting or advising positions with organisations focusing on applied research, policy advice or commercialization.

E5 Evidence of a significant leadership role that will translate and contribute to the academic mission of the University (e.g. implementing research-based improvements in professional practice or impact in a specific discipline).

E6 Significant leadership contribution to activities that have changed practice and will contribute to the academic mission of the University (e.g. professional guidelines or review groups).

E7 Organisation of significant national and international conferences, workshops or collaborative industry, business or policy partnerships.

E8 Invited contributor to prestigious lectures, major reviews, expert witness investigations or national policy committees.

Devise and develop approaches to applied research, Impact and engagement, which are innovative, reflect best practice and set priorities for early career colleagues accordingly.

Make effective decisions, setting priorities and deploying resources, in relation to research, teaching and administration activities.

Prioritise work in line with School/College strategic objectives including contribution to strategy direction and School/College leadership. Make balanced and well justified decisions on objectives, grant submissions, publication choices,

supervision of research colleagues and progression of research students. Contribute to University/College/School decision-making and strategy development.

Internal/External Relationships

Internal:

Establish effective working relations with colleagues in the Adam Smith Business School, including those in leadership roles, to ensure that School/College strategic objectives are met and that University protocols relating to quality assurance and programme enhancement are enacted.

Demonstrate leadership in building effective relationships with academic colleagues across the University and across external institutions both nationally and internationally, developing and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations, providing support and guidance to early career academics as appropriate

External:

Effectively liaise with appropriate external funding bodies, contributing to committees and review boards as appropriate.

Develop productive networks with academic colleagues in disciplines and/or other Universities both national and international. Develop links with professional institutes to project the Adam Smith Business School's international reputation as research-led and professionally-focussed.

Problem Solving

Resolving issues in relation to applied research, commercialization and external partnerships, reviewing and revising project and programme objectives as appropriate and finding creative solutions to ensure the successful completion of projects.

Terms and Conditions

The appointment will be subject to the whole powers and conditions of any Act of Parliament, Ordinances, and Law affecting the University. The appointment is a whole-time appointment, the Professor undertaking to accept paid outside work only with the prior consent of the University Court. This provision does not apply to examinerships and such other appointments as are incidental to the ordinary course of University business.

Salary (Grade 10) will be within the Professorial range and subject to negotiation.

This post is part time, 10.50 hours per week and fixed term for 3 years.
