Professor in Physics of Life (E&R)

Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science & Economy – Living Systems Institute

This full-time permanent post is available immediately.

Opened in 2017, the Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a flagship interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Exeter housing Physicists, Mathematicians, Engineers, Biologists and Biomedical scientists. The ambition of the Institute is to decode the complexity of living systems across scales, from sub-molecular to cell populations, and from microbes to humans. The LSI's shared mission is to discover, understand and control the fundamental rules of life. The £52m LSI building provides 7500 square metres of research space, including three floors of state-of-the-art open space laboratories for cell and molecular biology research, and two basement floors with laser labs, insectary, and microscopy rooms.

The LSI is seeking to appoint a Professor of Physics of Life, based in the interdisciplinary Living Systems Institute and affiliated to the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The chosen candidate will support research and teaching that combines theoretical and technological expertise with a world-leading programme of experimental research in the biophysics of cellular and multicellular systems. Fields of interest include topics such as robustness of living systems, mechanobiology, morphogenesis, collective behaviour, cell state transitions, soft and active matter, single-molecule biophysics, or other physics-led biology broadly defined.

The successful applicant be a globally recognised leader in the field of physics with an innovative approach to the biophysics of cellular and multicellular systems and a depth of knowledge and understanding of the field. They will be able to demonstrate a record of success in securing competitive research funding and publishing in high-quality outputs. They will play a leading role in strengthening research and teaching at the interface between physics and biology and foster collaboration between the LSI and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. They will share Exeter's commitment to fostering an inclusive and nurturing culture, promoting equality and diversity.
