Description
Provide developmental academic advising for new and continuing students in
undergraduate programs. Create a welcoming environment with excellent customer
service and support while assisting students in navigating questions and
challenges. By utilizing a case management approach, the advisor will assist
each student with academic scheduling and registration, understanding program
curriculum and prerequisites necessary for successful completion of the chosen
major.
The Professional Advisor will operate as a retention navigator and direct
students to appropriate internal and external resources with the purpose of
assisting the student successful achievement of their personal, academic, and
professional goals. Advisors play a critical role in individual student
success as well as increasing retention and course completion rates for the
institution.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Manage academic advising caseload of 200 students in a manner that
promotes retention, persistence, and student success through proactive
interactions and interventions
Assist students in the development of an Individualized Academic Plan
Utilize the retention model weekly and intervene with students who are
struggling.
Engage with students through regular meetings, communications,
interventions, assessments, and data collection
Demonstrate a strong commitment to student academic success and personal
development through advocacy, approachability, problem-solving, and
support
Work with students in conjunction with the Career Center to clarify
personal and academic career goals
Assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the College's
registration process and processes to be completed prior to the beginning
of each semester
Educate advisees in the institution's academic programs, curriculum,
practices, and academic and student policies.
Create advising materials in conjunction with Student Affairs and Academic
Affairs for distribution to students, faculty, and staff
Partner with financial aid to assist students in navigating scholarship
and academic completion requirements (NAIA athletics, SMTG Honors, and
21st Century Scholars, etc.) as well as navigating minors and/or double
majors
Interpret admissions assessment scores, previous college experience and
standardized testing scores to advise students of appropriate placement
and coursework. Assisting students to understand these processes and
placements.
Document academic advising records in compliance with College and the
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Develop and maintain appropriate relationships with students, faculty, and
staff
Engage with members of the college community in the academic advising
process
Collaborate with the faculty mentor and student to implement the
individualized academic plan
Participate in professional development opportunities as well as college-
wide committees

Requirements
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred in related field
(student affairs, education, higher ed administration, etc).
Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects and working
independently.
Must possess excellent “people” skills including working successfully with
diverse populations.
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have experience in public
speaking.
Strong technology skills required. Experience in student information
systems preferred.
