POSITION SUMMARY

The Prison Program Fellow will help the Liberal Arts in Prison Program (LAPP) by providing crucial academic support for incarcerated students at both Newton and Mitchellville prisons. The Fellow will schedule and coordinate tutors and research assistants for college courses in prison; procure and coordinate course materials; provide tutoring themselves; coordinate transportation for instructors, tutors, and volunteers; assist LAPP staff with clerical work and record-keeping; and other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate tutoring and other course supports
  • Tutor incarcerated students, especially in writing
  • Coordinate transportation; procure course materials
  • Perform clerical work to support prison program staff
  • This is a Post-Baccalaureate fellowship, 12-month, full-time position. The rate of pay is $17 per hour and is benefits eligible.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university required
  • Less than 6 months' work experience required
  • Grinnell College graduates will be considered first
  • Regular travel to Iowa prisons
  • Driver's license required
  • Must be able to complete Department of Corrections clearance process to enter prisons
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use multiple modes of communication effectively across all levels of constituencies
  • Independently organizes and manages workloads in an efficient manner
  • Champions Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Must be passionate about working with non-traditional, adult students
  • Requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, compassion, and ability to understand complex systems
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer candidates who have experience as a writing mentor, research tutor, or other academic peer tutor at Grinnell College.
