Post Title: Principal Lecturer in Computer Science

SBU/Department: School of Physics Engineering and Computer Science/ Department of Computer Science

FTE : 1 FTE (full time position, working 37 hours per week)

Duration of Contract: Permanent

Salary: UH9 £53,353 to £63,673 pa depending on skills and prior experience

Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

Applications are invited for a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire. The Department has an international reputation for teaching and research, with 66 academic staff, 60 adjunct lecturer staff, and 65 research students and postdoctoral research staff. With a history going back to 1958, the Department teaches one of the largest cohorts of students in the UK, and also delivers a thriving online computer science degree programme.

We are looking to recruit a computer scientist with expertise in, and experience of teaching and assessing modules in the following subject areas of computer science:

• Software Engineering and practical software development

• Programming

Main duties and responsibilities

The postholder will be expected to contribute to learning and teaching relevant to core computer science topics, lead curriculum review and development, design and develop new modules, and supervise student projects at all levels.

The postholder will be expected to proactively participate in enterprise, knowledge transfer and/or research and scholarship in the school. Principal lecturers are expected to contribute to the wider academic environment, through scholarly activity, support events, and projects, including open days, outreach, extra curricula initiatives, and potentially act as a representative of the School or University at national or international fora.

Skills and experience required

With respect to teaching, the appointee will have prior experience of developing and delivering modules in Computer Science with a significant experience of operating in a UK HE Environment, or equivalent professional experience.

Principal lecturers are expected to take on duties in the capacity of leader, and hence experience of academic leadership, programme leadership and line management is desirable. Experience of leading specific projects in HE (for example student personal tutorial programme, timetabling etc) is essential.

Qualifications required

Applicants must hold an Honours degree (or equivalent level qualification), in Computer Science or a related subject area, and a PhD (or relevant postgraduate professional qualifications) in Computer Science or a related subject area.
