Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician for the department of Psychiatry at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under direction of a Principal Investigator or Laboratory Manager, performs, and/or supervises the work of technical employees, engaged in specialized research activities of the laboratory. May conduct complex research activities involving collection, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of research data. Trains and develops subordinate staff.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Leads Laboratory Technicians and support personnel in the receiving, unpacking, sorting, and opening of specimens. Oversees the preparation and distribution of specimens received for examination and is responsible for the disposal of specimens when examinations are complete.
  • Assigns and instructs subordinate laboratory employees and supervises the performance of their work.
  • Assists and/or oversees all technical and experimental procedures pursuant to the required research activity.
  • Oversees the preparation and standardization of reagents and standard solutions, culture media and stains, and antigens used in the section.
  • Oversees or performs the maintenance and proper use of Ph meter, analytical balances, spectrophotometer, autoclaves, washer, ovens, ultrasonic cleaner, microscopes, automatic pipettes and other related laboratory equipment. Instructs other employees on equipment use and maintenance as needed.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Associates Degree in relevant science plus two (2) years related experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous lead experience highly desirable.
  • Computer literacy desirable.
  • Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert up to 25 pounds.
