Job Summary
Pre-clerkship Course Directors will plan and implement the 12 courses that
comprise the first 18 months of the pre-clerkship phase of the CDU, Medical
Degree Program curriculum. In addition to the individual course for which they
are responsible, course directors will participate collectively in COM
curriculum planning activities as the Pre-clerkship Course Directors Group,
which will operate as a subcommittee of the Education Program Curriculum
Committee (EPCC).
Essential Duties
Essential Duties:
Select a co-director who should be clinical faculty if the director is
basic science faculty and a basic science faculty if the director is
clinical faculty.
Organize a team of faculty and staff to produce the course as required by
the EPCC.
Lead the course pre-planning activities, including identification of
appropriate content, and teaching faculty, identifying problem based cases
for small group learning, and linkages with other pre-clerkship and
longitudinal courses.
Review pre-package course content that is on the market for possible
inclusion as course materials and delivery mechanism
Develop and present the course materials to the EPCC for approval,
including overall learning objectives, syllabus and bibliography, course
schedule and session-by-session learning objectives and faculty.
Attend curricular retreats, planning meetings, session administration and
exam meetings, and any other meetings appropriate for course success.
Attend lectures/activities in the unit (approximately 15 hours per week
for the duration of the unit, 4-6 weeks). Provide peer review for
lecturing faculty as needed.
Contribute to, facilitate and approve all quiz and final exam questions.
Actively participate in the post-planning/debriefing/evaluation of the
course sessions, including annual review activities.
Work collaboratively with Associate Dean for Medical Education, Assistant
Dean for Medical Education, Director of Medical Education, Director of
Pre-clerkship Courses and the EPCC to meet the needs of course and the
EPCC. This includes collaborating with the Fundamentals of Medicine and
Organ Systems Course Directors, to plan for clinical cases that align with
the sessions.
Teaching in the unit is not required.
Activities may be assigned to a co-director and other faculty on the
teaching team for the course.

OS 1 – Cardiovascular/Respiratory Systems
OS 2 – Renal/Urologic/GI Systems
OS 3 – Musculoskeletal/Rheumatology/ Skin Systems
OS 4 – Endocrinology/Reproductive Systems
OS 5 – Nervous System/Behavior
OS 6 – Ophthalmic/Otolaryngolic Systems
OS 7 – Blood & Lymphoreticular System
Time Commitment:
Immediate planning and participation (next 5 months) approximately 8
hours/week
Pre-course (12 weeks prior): approximately 8 hours/week
While course is in progress (4-6 weeks): approximately 15 hours/week
Post-course (rest of year): 1-3 hours per week
Required Qualifications
Basic Science course directors: Must have expertise in the course content
area for a basic medical science as needed for one of the 12 courses,
preferably with a earned doctorate (PhD) and experience in pre-clerkship
teaching in an accredited medical school
Clinical Course Directors: Must have expertise in the course content area
for a clinical science as needed for one of the 12 courses, preferably with an
MD and Board Certification and experience in pre-clerkship teaching in an
accredited medical school
Minimum Requirements
Understanding of educational pedagogy as it relates to the clinical
sciences
Experience developing medical school clinical courses
Experience managing professionals in a complex organization
Proven experience in management of multiple initiatives and multiple sites
Experience with LCME and/or other accrediting bodies
Experience working with diverse students or diverse populations
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
A record of teaching excellence, educational leadership, and
organizational talent
