The Education Policy Initiative at Carolina (EPIC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an outstanding scholar for a qualitative post-doctoral position to begin October 1, 2021. EPIC is a policy research and evaluation initiative within UNC Public Policy. EPIC conducts relevant and useful research and evaluation activities to facilitate the accumulation of knowledge about education policy and practice. Towards this end, EPIC aims to cultivate and sustain research-to-practice partnerships—long-term, mutually beneficial collaborations between researchers and practitioners—with policymakers and educators across North Carolina. The post-doctoral associate will have the opportunity to further develop their qualitative skills by participating in multiple diverse projects including evaluation studies of several North Carolina education initiatives and foundation funded research and evaluation projects across the country. The post-doctoral associate will have the opportunity to increase their qualitative skills and build experience with conducting rigorous evaluations. They will be expected to contribute to an independent program of research that attracts extra-mural support as well as serve as a mentor to research support staff and undergraduate students. The post-doctoral associate will also have the opportunity to engage in mixed- methods research and develop quantitative skills if interested.

Applicants must have a strong record of qualitative research and collaborating with others to produce high impact scientific research relevant to issues in education and education policy. Knowledge of qualitative research methods including protocol development, interviewing, conducting focus groups, coding, analyzing, and developing themes is required. The candidate must also be experienced in working as a collaborator with researchers and producing high quality written products. Experience in education policy research and program evaluation is preferred.

Our strong preference is for a candidate who has experience with developing and executing research plans, crafting reports, and proficiency in Dedoose, Atlas.ti or other qualitative coding software. The successful candidate will show clear evidence of potential to provide intellectual leadership in applying qualitative methods to education policy problems. Candidates with well-developed theoretical and disciplinary skills around and commitments to equity are strongly encouraged to apply. In particular, EPIC seeks to work with a scholar with experience investigating issues of equity and inequality pertaining to education and educational opportunities.

Educational Requirements

Ph.D. in Public Policy, Education, Sociology or other social science discipline.

Qualifications and Experience

Experience/ strong background in qualitative data collection, analysis, rigorous research design and implementation. Experience with qualitative research, including conducting interviews and focus groups, developing protocols and codebooks, transcribing and coding data, and analyzing data to develop themes. Evidence of producing high quality written products. Proficient computer skills including, Dedoose, Atlas.ti and Microsoft Suite. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to present findings to a variety of audiences required.
