    Position description

Postdoctoral position available: Ocean and Climate Dynamics

Dr. Henri Drake in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a motivated postdoctoral scholar to investigate the energetic pathways of tidally-driven internal waves from generation to dissipation, contributing to the evaluation and improvement of ocean mixing parameterizations for Earth System Models. Candidates will be expected to configure and run idealized Large Eddy Simulations on a High-Performance Computing cluster with the Oceananigans.jl model; analyze the simulated energy budgets and turbulence characteristics; compare their results to direct numerical simulations, in-situ observations, and theoretical parameterizations; communicate their results through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and open-source code development; and mentor students in the group.

    Position perks:

This is a two-year position that is renewable for up to four years, pending good progress and funding. The start date is flexible, ideally sometime in the Fall of 2023. The salary will range from 60,000 to 78,000 USD per year, scaling with experience as detailed here, and includes generous benefits. The position allows for a hybrid work schedule, with up to 60% time working remotely.

Perks of the Ocean and Climate Dynamics group, the ESS department, and UCI Campus:

The Ocean and Climate Dynamics group led by Dr. Henri Drake uses theory and numerical simulation to study multi-scale dynamical ocean processes that are particularly relevant to Earth System dynamics and anthropogenic change. The group benefits from close collaborations with both ocean model developers and sea-going oceanographers.

The Earth System Science Department at UC Irvine is highly interdisciplinary. It is comprised of around 25 faculty with broad expertise, all devoted to the study of the Earth as a coupled system.

UC Irvine is located in Orange County, about halfway between the diverse metropolitans areas of Los Angeles and San Diego. It is a sunny and pleasant place to live, surrounded by beaches, parks, mountains.

If you have any questions please email Dr. Henri Drake ([email protected]) with “Postdoc Application Question” in the subject line. Candidates can learn more about our research group from our website: https: // faculty.sites.uci.edu/drakelab/.

    Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    • An expected or recent Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography or related field (Geophysical and Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Atmospheric Dynamics, Applied Mathematics, etc). • Proficient programming (Julia, Python, MATLAB) and strong quantitative skills. • Detail oriented with strong organizational and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with High Performance Computing is strongly preferred. Ideal candidates will be familiar with the theory of oceanic waves, instabilities, and turbulence, and have experience running computational ocean models for regional or process studies (e.g. Oceananigans.jl, MITgcm, ROMS, Diablo, SUNTANS).
