Processes (f/m/d)

Within the Emmy Noether project “QuakeID”, the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry and Geophysics (BGI) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany is seeking a candidate for a

Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Numerical Modelling of Deep Earthquake Processes (f/m/d)

The main objective of the project is to develop and conduct numerical models to simulate and analyze deep earthquake rupture processes. The candidate will become part of a team of a post-doctoral researcher, two PhD students and the project leader (Dr. Marcel Thielmann).

Code development will be conducted in close collaboration with project partners at ETH Zürich (Dr. Ludovic Räss), the University of Frankfurt (Prof. Thibault Duretz) and will also be coordinated with the GPU4GEO project.

This position offers the possibility to be part of an interdisciplinary team consisting of both modellers and experimentalists. The BGI has a long history of research into Earth and Planetary Sciences and offers an ideal environment for additional collaborations, which are also encouraged.

Your responsibilities:

  • Develop/extend a software framework to model deep earthquake rupture processes.
  • Conduct numerical simulations and analyze data.
  • Data compilation on the ambient conditions of deep earthquakes and on their seismological characteristics.
  • Present results at scientific conferences and in scientific journals.
  • Close collaboration within an interdisciplinary group and institute.
  • Your qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant field (geophysics, computational physics, geodynamics or similar). We are looking for a candidate with a strong computational background including experience in the numerical solution of partial differential equations, optimization techniques, and parallel computing.
  • Very good programming skills, experience in scientific programming (Julia, CUDA, Matlab, C/C++).
  • Proficient in spoken and written English; proficiency in German is beneficial, but not required.
  • An ideal candidate will have worked with geodynamical simulation codes previously. Prior knowledge of deep earthquake processes is not required.
  • A good track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
