  • Depending on skills, the successful candidate will : - contribute to the simulations of the experimental setup, to the tests and optimization of the detection system and the real time data acquisition system. - take part in the running of experiments and, depending on the available time, in performing a preliminary data analysis.

    The goal of this project is to perform the most precise measurement ever of the shape of the full energy spectrum of beta particles emitted in the decay of 6He nuclei. This measurement will enable to determine a parameter, the so- called “Fierz term”, which is sensitive to a possible contribution of exotic tensor type interactions to the weak decays. Such a contribution would be a signature of new physics beyond the standard electroweak model. The choice of this particular nucleus relies on a number of critical properties but in particular on the fact that it is possible to make a highly accurate description of the theoretical beta energy spectrum. The largest instrumental difficulty, related to the backscattering of electrons in matter, will be eliminated or strongly reduced by the appropriate design of the detection system geometries. These will fully surround the emitting source. The experiments are carried out at GANIL, Caen, using two types of radioactive beams, with either low or high energies, and with two experimental setups adapted to the beam energy. The possibility to perform complementary measurements at low and high energies with two setups enables to study systematic effects, which are very different at the two energies. GANIL is the only laboratory worldwide that is able to deliver radioactive beams of 6He nuclei at high energy, from fragmentation reaction in the LISE beam line, as well as at low energies, extracted from the SPIRAL target-source system.

    On the research aspect, the candidate will join the MPBE group (low energy precision measurements) within the Laboratoire de Physique Corpusculaire in Caen. The laboratory performs fundamental research in nuclear physics, physics of elementary particles and fundamental interactions, and is also involved in nuclear applied research.

    Eligibility criteria

    We seek talented and strongly motivated candidates, to work on a competitive project in a well-established research team. Candidates should have a PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics. A familiarity with topics related to the weak interactions or with precision measurements at low energies will be a plus.
