The postdoctoral researcher will work as part of the NanoBubbles project team at LISIS, together with Dr. Marianne Noel and Dr. Frédérique Bordignon. The tasks will include empirical research and data analysis, presentation of results at NanoBubbles internal meetings and workshops, in international academic conferences and academic journals, and the organization of research-related academic events. Travels paid by the project are planned. Beyond the project, she/he will actively participate in the life of the laboratory, which regularly host international academic events. She/he will benefit from the IFRIS network and the lively academic context in the Paris region.
The Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences Innovations Sociétés (LISIS, UMR CNRS 9003) is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to join a five- year European Research Council-funded project "NanoBubbles: how, when and why does science fail to correct itself?”. The NanoBubbles ERC Synergy project's objective is to understand how, when and why science fails to correct itself. The project's focus is claims made within the field of nanobiology. Project members combine approaches from the natural sciences, computer sciences, and the social sciences and humanities (Science and Technology Studies) to understand how error correction in science works and what obstacles it faces. For this purpose, we aim to trace claims and corrections through various channels of scientific communication (journals, social media, platforms dedicated to error correction, conference programs, etc.) via both qualitative and digital methods. The postdoctoral researcher recruited will carry out research on error correction/propagation practices. She/he will build up a corpus of nanobiology journals, starting by identifying the journals that fall within the field, even before the term nano was coined. The history of the field, the rhythm of creation and disappearance of journals as well as the actors evolving in the publishing ecosystem will be reconstituted in order to shed light on the central problem of the NanoBubbles project (the study of the mechanisms of correction of science). The hypothesis that the commercial character of journals constitutes is an hindrance that should be further investigated, in particular by analyzing the finances of the learned societies involved in nanobiology journals.
The position is located in Noisy-Champs (RER line A) in the LISIS offices on the Université Gustave Eiffel campus.
Eligibility criteriaApplicants should hold a PhD in STS or related fields (history, sociology, political sciences, communication sciences, etc.). A successful candidate will be familiar with STS concepts and theories; experienced in quantitative research methods and/or digital humanities ; interested in working in an interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment and in engaging with other knowledge cultures; able to work independently and as part of a team. English language skills at a high level of quality are essential for the position in general. French language skills are a plus, too.
Additional commentsBeginning date of the contract is September 1, 2022, but arrangements are possible. Depending on the starting date, the contract can be renewed for an additional 12, 18 or 24 months. Applications must be submitted online via the CNRS platform: https: // emploi.cnrs.fr/ Applications must include: - a CV including a description of previous research experience and the names and contact details of at least two referees, - a letter of interest (1 page maximum): briefly indicate why you are interested in joining the project, briefly describe your research achievements, your areas of expertise and your technical skills, - a scientific article, published or not, or a chapter of your thesis, that best represents the quality of your work (it does not have to be directly related to this project). Shortlisted applicants will be invited to online interviews conducted by the NanoBubbles committee shortly after the call closes, and final decisions will be made promptly before the end of June 2022.
