Essential Job Duties
The Hawkes Lab has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar to work on
the role of the foliar microbiome in wheat resilience. The research addresses
ecological and biological mechanisms underlying wheat-microbe interactions.
Specific responsibilities will include: (1) field sampling of wheat from
stands across NC, (2) isolation, maintenance, and characterization of
microbes from wheat, (3) functional tests of the wheat microbiome in
greenhouse experiments, (4) library preps for sample metagenomics and
isolate genome sequencing, (5) bioinformatic and statistical analysis of
data, and (6) manuscript writing and presentations based on results. The
postdoc will also have the opportunity to develop projects in their area of
expertise. This is a collaborative project and the postdoc will also work with
the Brown-Guedira and Sozzani labs at NCSU, as well as with collaborators in
Denmark and the Netherlands.
The postdoc will also be expected to participate in general lab activities
related to the project, including ordering supplies, cleaning and sterilizing
equipment, organizing waste disposal, recording activities in paper and
electronic notebooks, and mentoring undergraduates.
Work Schedule 40 hrs/Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm (as research requires)
Department Required Skills
Ph.D. in an appropriate field (e.g., plant biology, microbiology,
ecology, molecular biology, soil science) awarded no more than 5 years
from the initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
The candidate should also have excellent record-keeping, organizational,
interpersonal, and communication skills, a robust sense of ethics and
integrity, the ability to multi-task and work independently, and the
ability to work as part of a team that includes diverse people from

Evidence of prior successful development of collaborative research
projects and publication of results.
At least 2 years experience with plant microbiomes, molecular methods, and
sequence data analysis. Proficient verbal and written communication
