Position Information

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Applied Ecology is seeking highly motivated candidates for 1 or 2 postdoctoral research positions to join an interdisciplinary research team with a focus on risk sciences, risk governance, and responsible innovation in food and agriculture. The ideal candidate for this role is familiar with best practices in risk evaluations, intersections between natural sciences, engineering, and social sciences, and is interested in working with stakeholders including NC State Extension agents across North Carolina.

The primary responsibilities for this role are to: (1) conduct risk screening and evaluation of potential environmental, health, and societal impacts of emerging risks, including new contaminants, advanced materials and/or technologies used in food and agriculture; and (2) engage stakeholders, including members of NC State Cooperative Extension Service, to understand concerns and priorities with respect to environmental health and risk, and address those needs through further research, publication, and communication.

The postdoc would be expected to develop diverse outputs from this research and engagement work, by leading the development of 1-2 manuscripts within the first year. Additionally, the postdoc will lead and assist in the development of relevant Cooperative Extension publications (such as reports, online materials, and other media that can help communicate complex environmental risks to NC Cooperative Extension agents and local communities). The postdoc will be expected to assist in the development of proposals to seek external funding, and have opportunities to present at conferences and participate in local research communities.

One year of funding is available from approximately October 1, 2021, with the possibility for extending with demonstrated progress and achievements made during the first year.
