Offer Description

It aims to develop an international research network on the history of political objects in the age of revolutions (late 18th - late 19th century). The aim is to understand the place and role of objects - and material culture - in the processes of popular politicisation over a long 19th century, on an Atlantic scale (Europe-Americas). It is part of a rich recent historiography on objects and their 'agency' in social and political struggles in the century of revolutions.

The project, coordinated by Emmanuel Fureix, has a strong dimension of valorization and transmission of research, in collaboration with museums.

The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for the animation of the network of researchers (preparation of workshops), for the dialogue with the concerned heritage institutions (museums and archives), and finally for the setting up of a website for the dissemination of research on the valorisation of political objects.

By political objects we mean objects, including everyday and ordinary ones, which carry political signs and images (snuffboxes, knives, fans, pipes, scarves, mugs or plates), but also, more broadly, objects in which a political operation is incorporated - temporarily or durably : voting (the ballot box), protesting ("disobedient objects"), deliberating, adhering, commemorating (commemorative medals, secular relics), rewarding (civic decorations), boycotting, etc. All will be considered in their contribution to the process of popular politicisation in the century of revolutions.

The post-doctoral fellow will contribute to the organisation of several thematic workshops, involving both academics and representatives of museums and archives linked to the project.

He or she will be responsible for coordinating the collaboration of the network of researchers with museums that have 19th century political objects in their collections, in France and abroad. The dialogue with the museums will focus on the following points:

  • Identification and selection of political objects kept in museum collections and likely to be used for scientific purposes ;
  • Reflection on the construction of a website combining digital images of the objects, their metadata, and a historical account open to a wide public ;
  • Sharing of experience on the digital mediation of conserved objects.
  • He or she will participate in the creation of a database of objects selected for promotion, as well as in the thematic synopsis of the website. He or she will commission short articles (intended for a wide audience) from researchers, to be published on the future site.

    The person recruited will be attached to the CRHEC (Centre de recherche en histoire européenne comparée, UR 4392), a team which brings together historians from the Université Paris-Est Créteil, around five thematic axes, two of which are primarily concerned here: Visual, material and sound history / Construction of politics. The person recruited will be able to contribute to the scientific initiatives carried out within the laboratory, the UFR LLSH and, more broadly, the Université Paris-Est Créteil, particularly within the framework of the "Science with and for Society" label.
