Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Political Science

The Department of Government at the University of Bergen invites applicants for a four-year postdoctoral research fellow position. The successful candidate will be part of a research team who will collect extensive amounts of survey data and survey experimental data in Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, and France, and will participate in the research project “Inclusive Politics” (INCLUDE). The call is open to any theme or research question in political science that the candidate wishes to pursue. It is however a requirement for the candidate to have a strong background in survey and/or experimental methodology/ analysis, and that their postdoctoral project will make use of the opportunity to collect survey and survey experimental data.

The Department of Government covers political science, studies of public policy, public administration, political behaviour, democracy and participation, and political institutions and organisation. Research at the Department is organized in research groups. Applicants are advised to consult and make themselves familiar with the general teaching and research profile of the department, the department's research infrastructure DIGSSCORE, and the data collection plans of the Inclusive Politics Project.

Qualifications:

A PhD in political science or an equivalent degree in a closely related field such as political sociology, political communication, or political psychology (completed or very close to submission). It is a condition of employment that the PhD is awarded

An academic publication record appropriate to the career stage

Demonstrated skills in and experience with survey and/or experimental methodology/analysis

The scientific quality of ongoing research and future plans will be taken into consideration

We seek candidates with good personal qualities who can contribute to the academic development of the Department of Government

Proficiency in both written and oral English is required

Potential candidates may be invited to the Department for an interview, and to present their research proposal.

The appointed candidate is expected to live and work in the Bergen region and contribute actively to activities at the department.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is four year(s). The equivalent of three of the four years (75%) will be dedicated to the candidate's self-defined project. One of the four years (25%) will be dedicated to project work, such as preparation of surveys, project meetings, and public dissemination of results, or teaching at the department.

Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position

A research proposal: A research proposal of 4-5 pages must accompany the application. The proposal should contain a progress plan for the different parts of the research work, as well as a plan regarding publishing. It is a requirement that the research proposal includes concrete plans to take advantage of the opportunity to collect survey and survey experimental data

Up to five scientific publications and/or papers in preparation for publication

Transcripts/certificates/diplomas and the like documenting the award of main degrees. If the applicant has not yet defended their PhD, a letter from the supervisor stating that the PhD is likely to be awarded, should accompany the application

The names and contact information of two reference persons. One of these must be the main advisor from the PhD programme
