  • About This Opportunity

    The project will involve the development of reusable, nano-scale biocatalysts for use in fine chemical synthesis. We will use virus-like particles (VLPs) as scaffolds for attaching cytochrome P450 enzymes to create nano-catalysts for diverse applications in green chemistry, including the sustainable production of bioplastics from seed oils. The research is aimed at gaining a fundamental understanding of the way in which P450s can be immobilised in VLPs as well as how such systems can be customised for industrial application. The candidate will design and perform research towards these goals.

    Key responsibilities include:

    Research

  • Carry out laboratory research work in collaboration with the principal investigators and other members of their research groups.

  • Conduct literature reviews in the appropriate area(s).

  • Conduct cutting-edge research and publish scholarly papers.

  • Contribute to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students.

  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of laboratory research.

  • Provide written and verbal reports (inclusive of manuscript submissions) on outputs associated with the project, inclusive of associated data analyses.

  • Participate in applications for external research funding.

  • Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding the results of the project where appropriate and when requested.

  • Produce quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

  • Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

  • Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

  • Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

  • Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

    About You

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in the area of Enzymology, Protein Engineering, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, Structural Biology, Chemistry, Industrial Biotechnology, Molecular Biology , Plant Biology or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of Enzymology, Protein Engineering, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, Structural Biology, Plant biology or Chemistry.

  • Expertise in molecular cloning and recombinant protein expression and purification, or plant biotechnology

  • Evidence of a contribution to research projects, including publication in scholarly international journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and adherence to local regulations governing biosafety and work with genetically modified organisms.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple research projects and experience in liaising and collaborating with external research groups to develop co- operative research projects is desirable

  • Experience in supervision of undergraduate research students is desirable

  • An emerging profile in research in the discipline area.

  • Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.

  • Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities

  • What We Can Offer

    This is a full time (100% FTE), fixed term position to 31 December 2023 at an Academic Level A.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of $72,144.35- $96,530.67 per annum plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of $84,408.89 - $112,940.88 per annum.
