Postdoctoral research fellow in Psychology Job description

An open postdoctoral fellowship position is available at the Section for Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience (CCN) at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo. The section covers basic and applied research as well as teaching for the Bachelor, Master, Professional and PhD programs in cognitive and biological psychology as well as clinical neuropsychology.

The research project associated with this position is open within the field covered by CCN. The applicants are expected to develop and submit a project outline. Applicants are encouraged to contact a research group leader or faculty staff member at the Section of Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience to discuss project plans and possible cooperation.

More about the position

The appointment is fulltime for a period of three or four years depending on the competence of the successful applicant and the teaching and administrative needs of the section.

In case of a four-year appointment, teaching and administrative activities make up 25% of yearly duty work (for example, teaching in lectures or seminars, supervision of students, grading of exams, committee work).

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in psychology, cognitive or computational neuroscience, medicine, biology, or a related field.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are necessary. Projects including clinical assessment and interviews may require fluency in a Scandinavian language. Any specific language requirements should be addressed as part of the feasibility section in the project outline.
  • Previous training in methods related to the section's research activities is required (e.g, brain imaging or biosignal analysis, cognitive modeling, advanced statistical methods, experimental cognitive methods, clinical assessment tools).
  • The candidate's research proposal needs to reflect research and organizational expertise (see below for the proposal's outline).
  • Relevant experience for the section's teaching activities is considered a plus (e.g., programming experience in MATLAB or R, familiarity with neuropsychological assessment procedures).

  • Work independently and in an organized manner in accordance with a project's resources and timeline.
  • Present and discuss academic topics clearly.
  • Establish and maintain academic collaborations within and across disciplines.
  • Demonstrate creativity and motivation in the implementation of projects as well as the shaping of the work environment.

    The application must include

  • a cover letter detailing the applicant's motivation and qualifications with relevance for the position.
  • a project proposal of max 5 pages (further information below), plus an additional letter of support of a fulltime CCN faculty member. The letter of support should specify any additional funding or resources that will be made available to the candidate, and should outline the role of the applicant in the preparation and planned implementation of the project.
  • a CV with a list of scientific contributions (in research, teaching, or dissemination).
  • copies of educational certificates in English or in one of the Scandinavian languages (academic transcripts only).
  • a list of two to three references (incl. name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number). No letter of reference should be included in the application.
  • The project proposal should contain the following sections: background, research questions/hypotheses, approach/methodology, implementation/feasibility, timeline, ethical considerations, relevance for the section, references. To which degree the planned project requires further internal or external resources and/or funding should be detailed. Further sections may be added if necessary. The page format must be A4 with 2 cm margins, single spacing and Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman or similar 11-point font. It is permitted to use 9-point font for the list of references and figure captions.

    The evaluation of the applicants will be based on a combination of the documented experience and expertise of the candidate, the scientific potential and feasibility of the project, and the fit between the project and the existing research portfolio of the section. Priority can be given to projects that contribute to enhanced collaboration within the section or with other sections at the Department. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged.
